<a href=http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=33878>Yet another</a> NWN2 interview, over at <a href=http://www.worthplaying.com>Worthplaying</a> this time. Turns out it's a D&D game, if you didn't quite know.<blockquote> Obsidian managed a successful debut with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, despite having to face the Herculean task of crafting a sequel to one of the finest licensed games ever made, and by a developer no less than Bioware. In light of that, it suddenly seems a bit more understandable that they're now tackling the unthinkable challenge of crafting the sequel to Neverwinter Nights, perhaps the single most popular Dungeons and Dragons game ever. With NWN, there is not only the challenge of crafting a successful single-player game, but of creating the campaign-writing software that made the original game such a perennial favorite among gamers. Long after you finished NWN, you could still spend hours playing through campaign modules for the game developed by other players. As with KotORII, Obsidian has the full support of Bioware in creating Neverwinter Nights 2, complete with access to original game code and design assets.</blockquote>Kind of a mixed blessing, and given that Obsidian apparently re-wrote basically everything, it looks like it wasn't terribly useful.

Well, hopefully they'll not get THAT restrained in time like that was the case in KOTOR2.
KOTOR2 is still a great RPG - but a rather poor game overall... like an Oblivion antipode :).
Oh, and, no matter what people say, Kreia is still 'TEH BESTEST EVAR"!

Actualy comparing the screwups in Oblivion ai and game balance we already know about i don't think Oblivion deserves the flatering of being called and antipode to KOTOR2. Let's just call it the ultimate graphics whoring experience where you can be a hero without much effort that casual gamers love so much.

Code:
As with KotORII, Obsidian has the full support of Bioware in creating Neverwinter Nights 2, complete with access to original game code and design assets.

And Bioware is also holding Obsidian balls real tight to make sure they don't "innovate" too much and decide to completely mess up with the rpg-system.

Bah. Bioware doesn't need to do that... Hasbro requires that a mini-nuke is implanted in the skull of any developers dealing with licensed material. Bioware doesn't have any say on the rpg material.

After ripping out the graphics engine and redoing shit for 3.5, I'm not sure what Bioware still has a say on, really. Probably a few shreds of code implementation...

No. That's still not going to happen. And even if Bioware wanted so, what power would they have over Obsidian or Atari?

"How involved is BioWare with the development of NWN2? What did you learn from your collaboration together on Knights of the Old Republic 2?

Feargus Urquhart: Well, we've worked with BioWare for a really long time... We worked a lot with them early on with stuff, but we have a whole group of guys who have made RPGs all by themselves. I guess in a lot of ways there hasn't really been a lot of collaboration. How KOTOR 2 worked is that we worked with LucasArts and we worked with Skywalker Ranch. We got the tools and the engine for KOTOR 2 from BioWare and they answered some questions when we had technical issues. But everything that you seen in KOTOR 2 is stuff that we created internally at Obsidian.

Then with Neverwinter 2, it's been pretty much the same thing - in fact, I'd say that we've talked with them a little less because we're all very familiar with the engine, because it shares similar components with the KOTOR 2 engine. Also with Neverwinter 2 we were going to be changing much more about the engine, so stuff that we were completely changing they wouldn't really have anything they could tell us about.

For the most part it's really been us doing pretty much the whole thing. We still work pretty closely with Atari and Wizards of the Coast making sure that everything fits in with their expectations."

"We worked a lot with them early on with stuff"

This is key, and why do people ignore this? Early on, as this suggests, BIo was definitely involved. From helping with the engine to even story continuity help according to multiple interviews and articles from the early stages.

Anyways, it's no doubt that Obsidian is the developer of NWN2. That should go without saying. But saying they got *no* help from BIO is like saying Obsidian got *no* help from Atari.

Well.. unless you are an Obsidian fanboy... and if the game si greta they'll praise Obsidian, and if it's poor... they'll blame Atari... much like the situation with KOTOR2... and, like Troika fanboys.

R00fles!

P.S. This preview is plain 'ol fashion retarded. Sooo many mistakes it's hilarious.
