First up, a brief and painful Gothic 3 review hosted by Fragland. Riddled with grammatical errors and a few factual gaffes (like the dubious claim that the Nameless Hero's stats all start at 0), the reviewer nevertheless concludes it's worth the price of admission. Final verdict? 74.5% - based on a surreal scoring system in which Gothic 3's "Concept" is panned and its "Sound" rates most highly despite the following complaint:

As for the sound especially the music is very strong, while the voice acting sucks. Maybe they switched the sound band for this game with that of a porn movie. Not only do the voices sound incredibly uninspired, every time a character goes down (particulary the main character) it was apparently necessary to make it sound like an orgy (or maybe they aren’t even faking).
I'm guessing the pun with "goes down" was unintended.

In the other corner we find a more detailed review from GamesRadar (whose heavily Flashy website makes me want to stab out my eyes with my housekeys). The thesis seems reasonable enough:

...there’s a lot that Gothic 3 offers for role-playing enthusiasts to sink their teeth into. Whether you’re sharpening your blade on a local smithy’s whetstone, hunting wild game, or just admiring the view, there’s always something to do in this immersive title. Over every hill lies another area that you’ll want to explore in Mirtana’s [sic] grand landscape, and with three separate factions to align yourself with and a seemingly never ending chain of quests, Gothic 3 could have knocked our socks off. But the finer pleasures of Gothic 3 get lost in its clumsy combat system, which demands frequent saving and loading.
Despite citing "Tons of quests" and "Lots of professions" in the review's wrap-up, "role-playing" for this author seems to end at "admiring the view" - as the review contains no other mention of character development, quests, or solutions. The reviewer even dings the game for allowing "hare-brained" tactics like luring "a group of wolves into a camp of enemies to thin out their numbers". Concentrating heavily on the combat "stun-lock" and on technical faults, the overall rating lands at 6/10 despite describing Gothic 3 as "an engrossing and deep RPG".

Maybe close combat is not so good, but crossbows are really funny.

I don't mind frequent savings and loadings, even if they're quite long (Oblivion has much shorter times).

btw, I laugh at agmes when they brag about no loadings creens/times yet the games pauses basiclaly to load the enxt area. R00fles!

btw, When did Suibhne get invited into the Hive Mind Article Poster? Not that I mind 'cause he's cool; but still...

I'd rate the game (thus far) around 70%.. Maybe 75% if I'm being nice. It's not a complete waste fo time as I do want to play; but way too many things weigh it down . It's a decent game. At least, unlike ES games and the earlier Gothic games, I ahve actually played it for more than a few hours and I actually want to continue playing it.

A week or two back, like RP, but I've been so snowed with work I haven't been able to troll for news. But thanks for the endorsement, despite our many loving disagreements.

That Fragland article was extremely skippeable, man, there's no earthly reason to cover some 13-year old kids personal gaming blog.

I agree about the quality of the review, but Fragland itself is a well-established second- or third-tier site. I don't know why the hell they published a review that sounded like a first draft for a LiveJournal page.

They should just have Ryuken write all their reviews.
Well, I am not an editor there nor do I have time to plough through all those games anymore. Only thing keeping me busy now is the SupCom beta, I'll wait for the Witcher or Dragon Age to get back to reviewing rpg's if nothing else is taking up time.

Why is it every review rips off the voice acting? I quite enjoy the voice acting, especially the Hashashin calling me "son of generosity" etc.

The only time the voice acting seemed off is when I did something for the one slave and he said "cool". Apart from that, its been good. The dialogue actually seems real, instead of the usual high melodrama.

I agree, the VO is the least of Gothic's probs. It fits the mood/atmosphere nicely.

The VO to me are 'just there'. Not horrible; not the greatest. Striaght down the middle.
