It's been a while since we've checked it but Freedroid, that spiffy remake of Paradroid, is still alive and kicking and has just been updated to v0.10.0.

Happy new year, from all of us at Freedroid RPG!

This year has seen some changes in the FdRPG team, but we've still
made some good progress that we hope you'll enjoy.

Perhaps the first update you'll notice is that we've begun a complete
overhaul of the story and dialogue with a ground-up rewrite. We've
taken time to make it more in-depth and give it a darker edge.

But if stories aren't your thing, and you just want some bot-crushing
action, you'll be pleased to find that there's a stabler engine, music
and sound updates, some new graphics and more gameplay balance.

Enjoy!

Sincerely,
The FdRPG Team

Only had time to mess with it a little bit last night. Most obvious difference is changes to the story and more setting options. The guards in the first town are now the "Red Guard" and are power mad little fascists. Voice acting appears to be gone in this version probably due to the rewrite. Seems run smoother.

I never even heard of this one before. What's the dealie with this one? Any good?

It's an offshoot of the FreeDroid project. Premise is the evil corporation MS(MegaSys) found a loophole in the GPL license and was able to take over all the free software in the world. Shortly after that all the robots running the MS OS go berserk and start killing everyone. The hero is Tux the Linux penguin so as you can tell be prepared for Linux vs. MS humor. Setting is sci-fi.

Dialogue is through a menu and so far no multiple choices but I'm not very far into this version. Some choices have immediate consequences. And they weren't joking about it being a total rewrite.

Combat is realtime. You only have to click on an enemy once and you attack until somebody is dead. Movement is either click on a location or you can hold down the mouse button and steer with the mouse like Sacred. You have melee, ranged weapons and magic. Tux also has some skills like melee, repair and hacking(which let him take over a bot).

It's not the greatest rpg ever and is still a work in progress. But it looks nice(OpenGL) and is somewhat entertaining. Plus the price can't be beat.
