<a href=http://www.gameshark.com>GameShark</a> has posted a <a href=http://www.gameshark.com/pc/previews/3198/Hellgate-London-Preview.htm>preview</a> of <a href=http://www.hellgatelondon.com/>Hellgate: London</a>:
<br>
<br>
<blockquote>Blending traditional role-playing elements and fast-paced action, Hellgate: London plays much like a spiritual successor to Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo.</blockquote>"spiritual successor" is quickly becoming one of those meaningless words & phrases like immersion, next-generation, and evolution. Speaking of evolution...
<br>
<br>
<blockquote>Lead Designer Bill Roper describes the game as an evolution of action role-playing. At the core of Hellgate: London, he explains, are the concepts of randomization, rarity, and customization. ... While we’re concerned that randomization may prove frustrating since levels will constantly be changing and enemies always respawning, Hellgate: London appears to use this to create an effervescent gameplay experience that is always new, different.</blockquote>Blending innovation, evolution, and Alzheimer’s disease...

Loki, Silverfall, Hellgate: London and Hero. Crap. Crap. Crap. Crap. A monotonous soup of crap. If they'd taken 5 percent of each of those games budgets and produced ONE Arcanum 2 or PsT 2 I'd been more than pleased. But no. As usual, a day full of crap.

Whats with the bitching and moaning about Hellgate? It's not like the game is claiming to be the next Fallout. It's an action RPG like Diablo. If you like powergaming and multiplayer action then you'll like it. If you replay Arcanum every three months then you won't. It sounds like a hell of a lot of fun to me.

People are irritated because of these piles of Action RPGs. Nobody understands what exactly is appealing in them, they dont sell and become soon forgotten and go unnoticed over the gaming websites, often recieving crappy scores, and yet still everyone and their grandma is making them.

At least one of them could have TB combat. You know, if the game is actionay at least make the bigest part of it, I dont know, *interesting*. Those clicking fests give me brain AIDS.

Ok people I like full fledged singleplayer rpgs.
Not this action rpg crap. Not MMorpgs.

Now that Electronic Arts White Council is cancelled -Hmmm - looks like our last hope is Elder Scrolls 5 - ARRRGGGHHHHH.

Ok, our last hope is maybe Divine Divinity (Next Gen), Heart of Eternity and Fallout 3. What do you think? What games can we old schoolerZ wait for?

The Witcher and Age of Decendence(check the section in this very forum). Personally Im also waiting for the Sith Lords Restoration Project to be done with adding the missing content to KotOR 2. There are also the Planescape modules for NWN 2 which look promising.

And Volourn the Troll claims that Jade Empire is worth waiting for. *shrugs*

But to expect an RPG from a huge ass American game company? No. Just... no.

There's a difference between Hellgate: London and the rest of the action RPGs being released. Namely: the people making the damn game. I haven't bought an action RPG since Diablo II and barring some kind of critical backlash, Hellgate will be my next one.

There's a difference between being cultured and having tunnel-vision. Diablo 2 was an absolutely great game - if you played it and it gave you "brain AIDS" then I feel sorry for you.

I claimed no such thing. i claim that if you are BIO fan you'll enjoy it. JE is a BIO game. If you like BIO; you should like JE. If you don't, JE likely won't.

Moron.

P.S. These actions games obviously sell. If they didn't more wouldn't be made. Afterall, it's no coincidence that Sacred is getting a sequel.

Dumbass.

It stinks like major American ass compared to

- SILVERFALL
- BLOOD MAGIC
- LOKI
- LEGEND - HAND OF GOD
- SACRED 2

which are all looking to be fine european products. I actually don't know about HERO, cause it's looks more like DARK MESSIAH than anything else.

If you are into turn-based I'd like to recommend

- WORLD OF CHAOS http://www.woc-game.de

My fave '07 next to WOC will be of course THE WITCHER .

action...MMO...missions... sounds like a decent candidate for the ' RPG of the year' award.

GameShark is calling this 'RPG'?

Game sounds interesting, but the auto targeting thing, if it's still in, takes the fun outta it. At the same time, with a game like this, graphics are kinda key, because that's honestly one of it's appealing parts to me (not that my machine will be able to run it, it's kinda old at this point). The last video I remember, the animations seemed kinda shitty and the graphics seemed blah (I've got no other way to explain it). That's me though, and maybe it was just a bad version of a vid.

Right now everything has been added and they are just testing it for bugs and such. I think most of this has been done as well. Im aiming at this or next month as the release.

More action shit..... :?

No wonder I am looking for some turn based combat on a CONSOLE!!!11! :!:

As for who made it? who cares? Like thats a prerequisite anymore. Check out Obsidian and see what the makers of Planescape Torment are making these days. Admittedly some of the best big name RPGs remaining, but that is saying soooo little.

I think I must crush your hopes.
Fallout 3 is made by the same guys who made Oblivion.
We're screwed.

but still, if you want a game that is worth looking forward to, check out Afterfall

Also look at Age of Decadence, as some already suggested, and be sure to check out Teudogar, which also has an own subforum on the Codex.

Pretty shitty preview. All they did was rip off an older preview before the Hunter faction was announced.

Anyway I wouldn't call Hellgate a successor to Diablo. It's really its own game and aside from some of the game mechanics, it doesn't play like Diablo's isometric point and click interface. It's a modern roguelike, though.

It's not an RPG, either. Like Diablo it's an Action RPG. Don't expect a thick plot with dialogue choices. It's all about killing monsters and clearing dungeons with by yourself or with your buddies.

- SILVERFALL
- BLOOD MAGIC
- LOKI
- LEGEND - HAND OF GOD
- SACRED 2
What's so great about those games, then? Aside from Sacred 2, there's nothing on that list I'd consider enjoyable.

Silverfall sucks. Try the demo, you'll see.

Never heard of Blood Magic. If the developers/publishers can't be bothered to market the game, it probably means they have no faith in it.

Loki is a Titan Quest ripoff with a linear storyline. There's no randomization. So, fuck that.

Legend - haven't heard too much about it.

Sacred 2 is the only thing you've mentioned that's worth a grain of interest, and that's mainly due to the multiplayer system they're implementing into the game. It was one of the big reasons why Diablo 2 was such a hit, and other games like it are not. Aside from the map randomization in D2, the game featured a huge online component. Sacred 2 looks to offer the same thing, and that's why it'll be better than all the others you've mentioned. Likewise, Hellgate: London features a huge online component, and it's from the guys who created Diablo and Diablo 2, so there's every reason to expect a good game out of it.

Blood Magic was marketed with full page ads around here about a year ago or more, and then suddenly disappeared from the radars.

That sure makes a lot of sense. And of course, "I've never heard of it before" equals "They didn't bother to market it".

Hellgate London is being made by the same team who made Diablo 1 and 2. I'll agree the games that copied the Diablo series were pretty crap, but these are the people who defined the genre. Whether you like that genre is another issue, but its reasonable to expect these guys to create a good exmple of said genre, based on past history. I'll give them the benifit of the doubt.

I guess I will enjox it when I play it, I quite like quick hack and slay action when I'm bored.

Although it's also certain that the game will quickly degrade into a clickfest with less tactics than Diablo. Hell, you don't vene have to aim at your enemy to hit it, you aim automatically and just have to click on the shooting button!
