<a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pc">Gamespot PC</a> posted a <a href=http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/gothic2/review.html>positive review</a> of <a href=http://www.gothicii.comhttp://www.piranha-bytes.com/gothic2/content_english/news_headlines.php>Gothic II</a>, <a href=http://www.piranha-bytes.com>Piranha Bytes</a>'s third person CRPG. They think it's real neat, so Gothic II scores <b>8.1 out of 10</b>.

<blockquote>Considering both its many quests and its trial-and-error gameplay, Gothic II is a substantially long game, and its different quests and different professions allow for some good replay value. If you're the sort of person who takes issue with constantly reloading previously saved games, who absolutely needs modern RPG amenities like an automap and an easy-to-use combat system, and who doesn't like the prospect of fighting and losing many battles, you should approach Gothic II with caution. However, if you're up for a real challenge, and don't mind fighting with (and against) the game's clunky control scheme, Gothic II will provide you with many hours of difficult battles, exploration, and interesting quests.</blockquote>

It's good to know North American gamers are finally getting Gothic II.

Hmm, that's a reasonably well-balanced review. Gothic 2 is an interesting, fun game. I just wish that the game continued it's excellent non-linearity beyond Chapter 1 (albeit, Chap 1 is a very long chapter).

I saw a review at rpgamer the other day that just blew me away. Gave the game 5/10 for these reasons:

>I guess you could say that Gothic 2 is a tragic hero. It scores high marks for
>innovation, for execution, and for variety, and then loses them all due to overlooking
>the fact that not everyone has 512MB of memory...
>Gothic 2 simply asks more then most PCs can give...

Let's see... It's innovative, well-executed and well-rounded... but I'm gonna rate it as an awful game because I'm too damn cheap to buy $60 worth of RAM. Or maybe they're not paying him enough for his reviews. :)

The gamespot review seemed positively enlightened after this crap.

Kinda makes one expect that soon the old "Opinions are like assholes...everyone has one," quip will be changed to "Game reviews are like assholes..."

The little boy wouldn't be griping like a crybaby about 512 MB of ram (cheap these days) if he was reviewing Unreal Tournament 2004 or Half Life 2. Why is that?

Is an RPG less of a game than a first person shooter, so much so that it isn't deserving of the latest hardware? Since when did this become a trend?

Typical of the trash I'd expect of dirt rag productions. Hell, 512 is considered standard now for RAM, sad as that may be. RAM is going up in quantity faster than the lack of memory creates a reason for devs to fix the loads of memory leaks and other memory eating issues.

There's even a market in RAM cleaners, to clean up after the sloppy work of someone else.

Anybody that complains about 512MB is living in the darkages. It's a minimum.

As for Gothic 2, I bought an imported version from gogamer earlier this year. I played up till where you pick a faction, but it just didn't grip me like the first one (maybe that's because its structure is so similiar to the first one).

I'll probably give it another go at some point.
