Let me be very clear up front: if you didn't like NWN2 or either of the expansions you are unlikely to enjoy this. I say that first because between the three releases we have seen the introduction of a new AD&D game system with plenty of new features and a fairly interesting story (NWN2), an expansion with some of the best writing in recent years (Mask of the Betrayer) and an expansion with loads of innovative features, plenty of combat, but a fairly thin plot (Storm of Zehir). I also mention it because NWN2 has caused loads of heated discussion on both sides in just about every forum I frequent. So if you haven't found a hook, chances are it is related to the underlying system and that dislike will ruin this adventure for you.

The side quests and party banter and little choices along the way combine with some larger choices in the main quest to make you feel in control of your destiny. Even better, the choices are not all the typical 'Take my money and I'll still do your quest / I'll do your quest for good amounts of gold / I'll kill you, take your gold and then complete the quest to get more gold' variety. There are options throughout to make use of your dialog skills, and even the non-skill choices are nuanced enough to be satisfying. You even get to choose when and how to assert yourself - there are times when you can just stand by and listen as your party decides how to proceed.

So in terms of the final value proposition, I would rate this as a 'must have' module in spite of the activation limitations.

The less rights I have to a product that I purchase the less I'm inclined to purchase. Just saying.

Since I completely disagree with txa's view on Darkness over Daggerford and he constantly compares MoW to it, I doubt I'd be interested even if I were looking to play more NWN2.
But at the very end of the review he writes something stupid:
There is too much quality writing and questing and role-playing available here to get hung up on the activation issues. And while I can hardly believe I just wrote that sentence, the truth is that while we hold some influence over how things proceed, the influence is ambiguous: not buying could mean that we are protesting DRM, tired of D&D games, bored with turn-based combat, or abandoning PC gaming.
I was nodding to "not buying could mean that we are protesting DRM, tired of D&D games" and then came to WTF "bored with turn-based combat". What fucking TB combat?!? I'm bored with RT combat as it is implemented in NWN2...

there is no turn-based combat anymore as you and I know it; in today's market RTwP = TB. Either support RTwP or play only RT games from here on out seems to be the mesage.

They changed it to "round-based" combat. What's combat in Gothic then, minute- or second-based? In MoW it's RTwP. Looks like somebody is simply afraid of saying "bored with RTwP-based combat".

I won't buy a video game that won't let me play after three installs.

Who on the Codex will be reviewing this?

Maybe me as the resident nwn2 expansions fanboy, but that would be a lot later into may or maybe even at the start of june.

That is, of course, if I feel like writing it.

I feel similarly, although I'll buy it and then probably DL a cracked version.

My biggest problem is online activation (and it being limited to 3). I don't want to depend on Atari maintaining their activation servers until the end of my gaming life.

"Buying the module and sending a letter to Atari protesting the DRM, however, would show that you are a paying customer who is tired of being treated like a potential criminal... but who will still keep buying their shit regardless."

Yea, that will rile up those suits.

I don't get it. It's a 10 bucks add-on. How many times do you expect to replay it?

Just buy it and if you ever run out of installs download a crack or something. It's not hard.

Guys, to clarify, it isn't three installs, it is three activations. If you have a system that'll run NWN2 fine, you can keep installing and uninstalling MoW with no problems. You can do that on three machines.

I believe you just need to keep a certain file on hand that has the serial number...

I forked out the 10 Euros for it, and played for about an hour. Seems not bad for a NWN2 game...
