That looked like a Gothic/Risen rip-off.

That wouldn't be too bad. I always wanted to see some proper Gothic wannabe not from Piranha. I suspect they'll change a bit to much though. And in the wrong direction.

But the real question is: "is this shit enough?" Will we be able to consider it as ultimate gaming argument? When new game would came will we be able to take any design idea that even slightly resembles Arcania and call that new game shit just because of connection. Would that be considered a perfectly valid argument? In fact more valid than any other, more valid than Bush, more valid than Stalin, even more valid Hitler himself? Will it overtook Oblivion and take its throne? Has that time came? Will codex embrace the new ways and became neonextgen?

I don't think so! Not Arcania. It's just shit for what it is.

I'd agree with that. I wouldn't object to Gothic inspiring a few other games. It'd be a shame for Gothic to end up being an anomalous blip in gaming history. Especially after the rather damp result that Gothic 3 (and especially the expansion) was.

It'd be almost more frustrating to see someone be inspired by Gothic and then twist it to make a terrible game, rather than see it or the idea ignored. An opportunity wasted. I'll give this one a chance though, in the hopes of seeing a decent continuation to the series.

It's also a series that would have benefited many times from opening it up more to modders. There's clearly a good fanbase and people eager, from what I've seen from the fans and released content.

It looks downright retarded. While I didn't really like the combat in Gothic I and II, it was still superior to what is shown in this trailer. In what fuckin way "fast paced combat" is better than "slow paced" and so promoted nowadays? Chaotic boring clusterfuck and button mashing = instant win. The retardization spreads.

There is at least one huge mod for G2: NotR. Not gonna even touch it. Who the fuck would want to spoil such a perfect thing? I'd rather replay the unmodded game for the umpteenth time than mod it. Like a complex fugue, it gets better every time you replay it: you acquire an increasingly sophisticated grasp and appreciation of the whole intricate canvas.

That's a point. The "fast paced combat" that is so often pushed isn't always a good thing if it means that they are simply limiting the options to the point where it is mindless button mashing. That only makes it seem more boring and more repetitive. It might take longer with other less "fast paced" systems, but at least it breaks up the boredom and repetitiveness. If you're having more fun the time passes quickly for you anyway.

It's hard to judge combat with a promotional video though. I can remember the disaster that was Gothic 3 on release when so many found out what the changes were in combat from 1 and 2.

No harm in that if you're having fun. Opening it up to modders would at least give people the option. This can be a good thing if they mess up some aspect of it and then the fans can hopefully change it easily or even produce new adventures. Improvement pack attempts would likely benefit.

I really liked G2 and NotR too, but not many games will likely have that level of quality play for me and G3 + expansion showed me that it's not even a certainty with the same series. It wouldn't have spoiled it for me if I had the option of tinkering with it or adding things to it later on (with any of the Gothic games) after I've played it through one or more times. I've been pleased and impressed at times with mod efforts in the past. You never know, you might be tempted to mar the perfection of it or another game one day with a mod.

Massive Magic Effects? Are you fucking kidding me? That's just the fantasy equivalent of putting "Explosions!" on your trailer. Fuck that.

But games HAVE lacked massive spell effects. In isometric view spells don't look massive, because, as a norm, you can't see far; in JRPG-style combat nothing looks like anything; I want fireballs that blow up everything from a mile's radius. Gothic 2: Night of the Raven had fire rain, but it didn't feel nearly apocalyptic enough.
