I agree, some good news right there. It looks to be a fantastic game where the devs actually learned and applied some things from the original.

So should I buy or torrent this, given that the studio is already dead?

Torrent it first. Only THEN buy it if you enjoy it. You don't have to of course, but I tend to buy the games that I like just because I feel like a prick if I really enjoy something and not reward the developers somewhat. Of course, I usually wait for a 'gold' edition of a game if available first, though that's not applicable here.

I played a bit more (1/4 of the game) and it reminds me of BG2 in 3D with smaller areas and a non-epic-chosen-one-plot. The c&c are on par with BG2.

The char-system is far superior and well done. You have a broad selection of classes, skills, advantages and disadvantages and special combat abilities. The advantages and disadvantages are just number-crunching, not like fallout or arcanum. You get XP and can spend the points directly in your skills, main attributes, secondary attributes etc. But for learning new skills, spells and combat abilities you need a trainer.
You have a broad selection of skills but they are not equal useful. Not really a problem, it´s the same thing as in every other rpg too. There are 23 non-combat skills and 13 combat skills (different weapon types) plus special combat abilities and spells.
The classes are not too restrictiv. Basically you can learn whatever you want. I started as a tweaked illusionist and I´m now some kind of combat-mage with melee-abilities. But I can´t get every spell. Some powerful spells are restricted to "real" mages.
When i replay the RoA-Triology I already know I will absolutely miss the char-system-improvements from Drakensang 2.

The combat has room for combinations and some tactics but positioning is completely useless. Filler combat isn´t more than in every other rpg, even less I would say. Overall I miss a resting system where resource management is necessary. Combat is generally easy till now and I don´t think it gets harder but I could be wrong (playing on hard). Sneaking wasn´t useful for me except one time (another time it would have been useful too but it´s easier and more rewarding to just fight). The game offers a wide selection of items without going over the top like NWN2.

Areas are feeling alive like e.g. the city. A merchant insults another merchant etc. There could have been a bit more interaction with the townsfolk and the guards don´t react when you lure bloodflies through the citydoors. While continuing the game new quests become available in already visited areas. What i really enjoyed are riddles. Ok, they are easy, but it´s nice to have some in a rpg again.

It´s your generic cliched typical fantasy but it doesn´t try to hide it and comes with an old-school charme. Your companions will talk once in a while but don´t confront you with emoshit or chasing you. I really like the game even with its flaws and I think everybody who could enjoy BG can enjoy Drakensang 2 too.

If the game would have an editor like NWN it would be heaven...

Heh, go do the water temple then say that again.

Now I wasn't very fond of the game, but that point does deserve recognition. I've actually found some of the puzzles surprisingly challenging (the lake fairy or somesuch, some optional stuff in the ancient ruins) which was quite refreshing because that aspect is notably absent from most modern RPGs.

I wonder if it will come standard with that latest DLC that I'd seen postings on to be lacking for mainly being a short chunk of combats?

Hope it makes it, I'd likely grab it from wherever on the DD groups so long as the price was good.
