Gamer's Guide to Life had gathered some questions from their community, now some unnamed Obsidian developers delivered the answers. A sample:

Will it be possible to max out all skills in one playthrough? Will there be many different endings (not just variations on a few opposite ones as in Fallout 3)?
If it's possible to max out all your skills in one go, no one's done it yet! There is more variation to our endings, as they depend on your reputation with various factions, actions you've taken, and companions you've recruited.

Does anyone else remember how there were meant to be 500 'permutations' of endings for Fallout 3. What the hell happened with that?

Apparently it was an offhand remark from a dev on an interview, likely talking about ending slides where changing a word or two already counts as a different ending.

There are 500 endings! You just have to take note of things like whether that Lyon's Pride chick is frowning or smiling, whether Liam Neeson's char has a nose ring, whether it's sunny or cloudy. All of those contribute to the 500 endings! OMG AWZOM

Over-exaggeration but they were probably referring to the stuff you see that is triggered by completing the various 'major' questlines in either a good or bad way.

It was "Honest" Pete Hines that made the 500 endings claim.

Peter Hines said:
(the) number of variations is over 500, but that's of all the different permutations you can have of each different variable and what you did at each point. I don't know how many of those there are (I haven't gone back to look), but it takes into account any number of things you've done from early in the game, right up to when the game ends - it takes into account all of that stuff"
