Two Worlds features a marvellous mechanic which means that if you find a duplicate of an item, you can combine it with the original to create an enhanced version with beefier characteristics.

Any single item can be stacked 20 times. At this point you've got something which is more effective than the original blueprint by an impressive order of magnitude.

It feels strange to say a game feels worthy because of a single element like this but it turns loot-hunting into an overriding obsession. It becomes a kind of cat-and-mouse game which has you constantly foraging for new and better gear but, perversely, almost hoping you don't find it, because you've spent several levels powering up a single item via the stacking process.

Most RPG population-centres give you a blacksmith, a food vendor, a general-supplies trader and so forth. The cities of Two Worlds boast crowds of traders. I swear I spent half my time in the game just sorting through their wares with a fine tooth comb.
I slay dragons for the lulz not to take an inventory of his hoard.

How is scouring three pages of shortswords looking for a statistical advantage fun? I wish combat data was obscured, it produces accountants not barbarians.

Sound like the writer will like Morrowind immensely. THere's shitload of items to be sorted there.

Of course, once you get tired of item sorting (pixel hunting by any other name) you just want to throw the game away.

Too much loot with minor statistical differences, like the devs were desperate to shoehorn Diablo type looting in there. Otherwise the opinion is fine, though excessive emphasis on the lootin' when I found the exploration and a bunch of nifty sidequests the main draw. Combat was ok too, if a little clunky. Certainly nothing that much worse than most ARPG's.

In before the 'It suxors' lamers.....

Ha, that weapon stacking was pretty addictive. Not only could you stack weapons, but you could stack elemental damage gems onto the weapons, for maximum powah. :bounce:

Agreed.

I enjoyed TW. I wasn't expecting a epic storyline similar to genre-bending RPG like Oblivion, all I wanted was a fun RPG and it was fun enough. Combine loot, create epic sets and bash enemies to death going at 2000 mph on your horse (which the sequel removed of course).

Also, it didn't have next-gen quests involving "sigil stones" or "Oblivion gates, gotta close them ALL".

In TW1? it looks quite pleasant with HDR turned all the way to the left (off), which also enables using AA. In fact this is the first game I play where bloom (if it's actually using it) is done well. Everything looks bright and vibrant without being eye-searing.

Speaking of bloom, screenshots of TW2 made it seem much worse. Is it because there's no setting like in TW1?

Moo?
I always thought the stacking was one of its better features, and should have been shamelessly copied by other games.

I also enjoyed the Resurrection ability allowing you to bring back *anyone*, even those who died in the storyline. When the Orcs massacred that oriental town, I killed the lot of them...then brought everyone (orcs and humans) back one by one, so the town now functioned normally and had a larger, more eccentric population. They patched it out in 1.5 or 1.6, but I never upgraded to that so it mattered little.

Yes, strangely TW2 has no HDR intensity slider or option to disable it, even though it's possible to do it manually through a config file. Just the usual dumbing down of USEFUL options in favor of a generic and useless settings panel for the consoletard crowd! :decline: They'd better patch all that stuff back in!
