Q: Hey, guy whose new game is being published by Bethesda, how much did you fucking hate Fallout 3?

A: I think they did a perfectly fine job.

Nobody takes these "played it & loved it" kinds of remarks seriously any more, unless they are made vehemently. If you have been in the industry long enough, it's bad form, unproductive and potentially even self-destructive to even criticise things you don't like.

Anyway he sounds far too jaded, what with his past work in game industry not being recognized by some newage consoletard punk at some press conference and putting too much emphasis on name recognition.

Turn-based didn't go away. It still exists and is very popular in jRPGs. It's just some big western companies that started the whole anti-turn-based propaganda to justify turning turn-based games into console shooters.

He actually said that there's no reason why there shouldn't be turn-based combat and party-creation in modern cRPGs.

Not only in Jrpg's, but also in Nintendo DS games, online games, flash games, etc.

Exactly, The Nips even sell a lot of TB strategy on the consoles (gasp!) so there's no real reason why there should be the retardation we are seeing in the west.

"I think fall out 3, and Mass Effect as well, is what people would have made in the 80's if they'd had the tech back then. In a pen and paper RPG, they have to have turne based, becouse there is not really any other way to fesably simulate cetan things. Same things with early computer games."

Too late now.
Now there's some kind of paranoia related with things like TB combat and focus on dice rolls. Things like that are considered now "backwards" by the majority.

jRPGs success were we fail because their projects are very low-budget, normaly for Nintendo DS. And when is for major consoles they already have a large legion of fans ready to buy their games.
If we want back RPGs like in the 80s and 90s we will have to adopt the same model: low-budget games for Steam or w/e. You can't make a AAA RPGs with today's standards because there's not enough people to buy it, hell, even mainstream genres strugle nowdays to not fail thanks the high cost of development.

They don't even make turn based jRPG's on the console any more. I think the last one I played was Lost Odyssey. The DS is however another matter. Maybe in Japan they still release turn based console games, but not any where else.

From what I can see on places that follow Japanese releases and the like they are still making them, not only for consoles but also PC, in some amount, but not even those who are kind of big budget and stuff, at least in comparison, are released in the west because of a perceived, or more than just perceived, lack of interest on it. Most of the experimental, uncommon, or niche japanese stuff we get is on those DS and PSP thingies.

It's kind of a shame, actually, given there are those pretty cool games that I feel many on the Codex would like even if we leave aside the old skool dungeon crawlers and the strategic and tactical JRPG thingies, stuff like Hungry Ghosts and Shadow Tower Abyss and, like, experimental adventure games and the like, that you can only play if you know japanese, while most of the formulaic crap actually gets translated to civilized languages. :?

Do any of the more original stuff get fan translations at all? I thought the ROM translation scene was doing quite well a few years ago, or did they all move on?

It depends. Most of the stuff that gets translations are Visual Novels, on one hand, and crazy popular stuff, on the other. So, if you are into Touhou, sure, every new touhou game, or touhou fangame with a reasonable amount of text, will be translated in about two weeks or something, and every now and then some random lonely fan with a lot of time on their hands will translate some game light on text, like it happened to some STGs, but outside of that not much happens, and even cool and interesting games from the NES and SNES, let alone the PS and PS2 one, era are either not being translated at all or a project is started and everyone then moves to something more popular and with a more numerous following after some frustration, usually stupid silly porn games and dating sims. So stuff like Hungry Ghosts, Shadow Tower Abyss, LSD, or even something relatively well known as Echo Night II are kind of not going to happen. And when a group decides to bring something, either as a new full blown fan translation or as an official one, they go for stuff that's easy to translate and either mostly humorous/random or games that really don't need text, like STGs.

Even the doujin and indie fans seems to be getting dead lazy as of late, as even crazy popular stuff like Corpse Party and Demonophobia have gone without a real translation for a long time, though Corpse Party got a lesser version translated on the PSP and, right, no one bought it. And while japanese Doujin and Indie developers are some pretty creative people if they aren't Touhou or Umineko they aren't getting translated either, or at least not for a long time. If you check Doujinstyle and the like you'll see every now and then a new ARPG, dungeon crawler, puzzle game, or strategic/tactical JRPG come out, sometimes even from recognizable names and companies, and they never get translated.

This is particularly depressing if you like horror games, too, and that goes without mentioning japan only consoles and japan only arcade games, if you are into that kind of stuff. Even a lot of PSP and DS stuff goes without translation because it is seen as lacking a market in the west, though many times it is actually something no one cares about (gothic lolita fashion games? Ok, that sounds kind of cool but, really, no market in the west). It's a good time to be learning japanese, I guess. Or to learn to use one of those software combinations that take text dumps of the game as it goes and then translate it for you to read in another window. I suck at technical stuff and that doesn't work in all cases, so I'll keep trying to decode the little runes and playing with a dictionary.

Edit: Ah, yes, and stuff that's seen as too girly, like most of the Atelier games with a female lead character, are neither translated, so if we aren't going to get even the Atelier games you can see how high our chances of getting Hungry Ghosts actually are.

Right on the money. A lot of 80s stuff needs to die but TB combat and big parties are fine. If KOTOR or Dragon Age had 6 person parties with TB combat they would have still sold well.

And they don't even have to make the combat system exclusively either. It's not like the RTwP combat in DAO had any depth, just work on a good solid TB system and slap on generic MMO RTwP and it will make everyone perfectly happy.

I think the western stigma on TB came about as a result of IP reboot rapes. They rape games that were TB and since they have to justify it somehow, they call it obsolete and whatnot, which then becomes a mainstream mentality.

It's pure malicious, slanderous advertising. I think that sort of stuff should be banned by advertising laws.

You ever heard of or remember fatbabies.com? It was a forum for folks in the industry. There was a sentiment that western RPGs would never sell reguardless of gameplay. I remember predictions that KOTOR and Fable would bomb on the Xbox.

I brag all the time about how I called it on the Interplay forums. I said back in 2001 that action RPGs are the future and that western RPGs will sell major on consoles. I could have told them that BG DA and FO BoS are not even close to being that shit too. Its funny people tried to argue that TB combat is a console staple because of JRPGS. TB combat was being destroyed by JRPGs. Thats where the stigma comes from.
JRPGs made people hate TB combat.

Ok new prediction. Action RPGs shot their wad and it was not all it could have been or cracked up to be. So the new shit for the future is whatever is good. If you fucken bring Final Fantasy blog shit people will hate on TB combat. but if its good its not going to rape your figures.

More depth than POR, and FO combined.

I think it was a good interview. I felt he answered sincerely on all questions. Some answers were a little politically correct, but that's just being a professional.

Only if you break it down. As a sum of its parts DAO was very shallow. With generic creatures, scaling, an overly level and hp based RPG system, and unbalanced classes DAO degenerated into a really simple game of AoE attacks behind tanks with less flavor and variation than PoR's old ass.

Just watched like the whole thing, y'know. Now Fargo, y'know, towards the end there especially, he like, y'know, really got his tongue twisted up y'know. Now frankly, y'know, I mean take it from me right, but I do a bit of that, y'know, but he's like really y'know falling apart there y'know, like with what he's trying to say y'know and I wouldn't say exactly that he, y'know, came across as coherent...

Y'know, more like a parody of y'know somebody like trying to, like really trying to say something, y'know, unsuccessfully.
