The developers of the newly released European CRPG Kult, Chris Bateman, the self-titled Creative Overlord of International Hobo and Peter Nagy of 3D People have been interviewed at FileFront.

Q: What do you feel are the most successful elements of the game?

Peter: This very much depends on the individual player – each player likes something different. But in fact, according to the responses we have received so far – the Attunements systems (even though it might need some improvement for clarity) – for a lot of players it is one of the best game experiences they have ever played since times of C64 games.

Chris: I am pleased with the player response to the Attunement system, but I’m also happy with how the story came out. It’s not your typical fantasy story. Also, this is one of the first fantasy RPGs where you won’t have to lug around a thousand healing potions… I do like the way this part of the mechanics work. You can heal indefinitely, but the more you heal in the field, the more beaten up you become. Eventually, you have to pull out of the field and rest.

Yeah, the attunement system is unique and its implementation deserves a lot of praise. If you're in Europe and you have access to the game, Kult's definitely worth checking out, whether or not you're starved for a CRPG.

Yes, I have quite enjoyed my time with the game. The attunement system is very awesome and I cannot wait to see what these guys do next. It's not the best CRPG ever, but for a first go, it's pretty slick.

I was actually very disapointed with Kult. The combat kinda sucked big time and the game just had a "low-quality" feeling about it. Pick up Restricted Area instead even if it is in german, it's a really great game and you do understand most off the basics with the help of a german dictionaire.
Hi by the way :) I'm a long time lurker.

PS If you play Restricted Area, start with Jhonson or Kenji they are the most simple characters. It takes a couple off hours before get the hang of the german. Das ist gut :)

I'll agree although I thought fighters needed more and better balanced attunement paths, it seemed better to skip water or fire and just max your critical hit numbers. If there had been more elemental units the fire/water powers would have been far more useful. The archer and mage setups looked less obvious with better choices, were they?

Most first time out games tend to be low quality unless they have a serious backer. These guys didn't and had to make do with what they had. I think it's a tremendous effort on their part and I certainly hope some big wig out there realizes this as well and funds their next project.

I haven't even beat the game yet, but I feel I am close. I have been using a warrior/mage combo with heavy accent on warrior. The only reason I even messed with magic for my first time through was because I figured due to the nature of the setting, it would probably be handy in later parts of the game.

I'm either gonna go full mage or archer my next go through.

How many hours have you put in? I'm curious to compare my numbers once you've finished.

Sheesh. Ummm.... I'd say maybe twenty hours? Heck, I don't know. I only play a little bit everyday. Plus, having heavy accent on warrior, I am pretty much mauling my way through the game rather quickly. I can see where an all magic character would take a bit longer.

Plus, I really don't know how close to the end I am. Feels close, but I could be wrong.

I found it quite easy to unlock all possible attunements linked to elements and bows compared to attunements linked to weapons. I actually used Fire alot because of the excellent raw damage of the second and first magic circles. I often used Air as well as that has an excellent Speed bonus attunement. At a certain level in the game using Earth element attunements, especially it's protective aura "Stone Aura", helps a lot. Water doesn't seem that powerful but can be useful as well.

Typically I never really bothered with playing fighter style. From early on in the game I bump Speed as much as possible and then start pounding enemies from range using an elemental focus or a bow depending on the situation.

And while Kult is not the best CRPG around it did manage to keep me busy for over 3 weeks non-stop. After one restart (due to the container issues) I finished the game at "normal" level running the 1.1 patch. I'm curious what game they plan to create next...

sounds like it's at least worth a whirl. i haven't been able to finish many games recently (i finished NWN for the first time last week though i've had it for over 2 years). i think the primary concern of any game is that it is entertaining and not too annoying (bugs) to force you to quit playing. most stuff has just been boring.

On this I agree, but Kult's attunement system definitely freshens things up a bit. Plus, while it doesn't have the freedom of Fallout, it does give you various moral choices that can affect the world around you to some extent. As I said, it's not the best CRPG ever, but I have enjoyed my time with it immensely. Just make sure you update if you get it. That container bug can be a real game killer.
