Worthplaying have written up a short preview of Irrational's rapidly (though not rapidly enough) approaching superhero World War II game, Freedom Force vs. the Third Reich, which comes with a heap of screenshots.
The engine itself seems to have undergone an extensive overhaul from the previous iteration. The interface and menu scheme retain their comic book styling, as do all of the in-game fonts from the subtitle text during cutscenes to the “BLAM!” and “POW!” sprites that appear when a character really takes a hit. The real meat of the engine improvements comes in the form of advanced shaders and lighting, real time shadows, a generous upgrade to the look of the special effects, and ridiculously sharper textures which are displayed in high contrast to give the title's visuals an authentic comic book look. Now, when a building comes down during a heated battle between Nazis and a guy flying around throwing fireballs, you can not only expect to be treated to a spectacular display of crumbling debris and smoke, but afterwards, you can look inside the sections still standing to see appropriate furniture and appliances. For instance, smash up a diner, and you'll see barstools and countertops mounted on a checkerboard floor.
That's a step up from the previous game where the insides of buildings seemed to be filled mainly with solid concrete.

That's excellent. I was afraid that buildings would be nothing more than a bunch of solid blocks. Irrational's taking this to the distance.

I hope they fix that "ACTUNG!" logo, though. That's a poor spelling.

At least these press releases are doing their job, everyone seems to be getting hyped up for this. I hope it lives up to it. The developers do seem to be listening to the complaints to improve it.

Seems like the fans of the old game all feel the same now, there are folk who never even touched the old game that now seem to be eager for it. If they blow their gone gold load at this kind of peak then they should please everyone and do better than the last time.

I can't wait to see the big comic companies throw more fits because someone made an outfit that looked a bit like one of their heroes in the game, without paying them for the privilege.

I think graphics look like crap (cheap grass texture, anyone?) and really think cell-shading could have improved that. Gave it more comic-like style.

Looks fine to me. Really, there is nothing in the shots that I can see that would make me thiink "oh dear, truly crap(tm) 3D interpretation of comic book visuals".

Looks fine. The emphasis will mainly be on fluent comic-book style combat, and that should be pretty good if the last one is anything to go by.

Who the fuck cares? Looks good to me. As long as it's got the same gameplay with all the added goodies they promise, I'll love it. Simple as that. :)

I'm with Otaku_Hanzo here, it looks fine to me and the gameplay additions are much more important than the graphics. As long as the grass doesn't interfere with gameplay, who really cares if it looks like astroturf or roll-a-lawn? I'm definitely looking forward to playing this game. :D
