Tags: Mass Effect 2

Gamers With Jobs put up a short article on how Mass Effect 2 transcended its humble origins to be elevated to the same heights as classics like Ultima 7, Fallout and... eh, Baldur's Gate.

The thing is, I’d lost the save files for my last two Mass Effect 2 playthroughs, and the thought of playing 3 with some generic Shepard was anathema. Totally unacceptable. And so, I’ve invested another 30 or so hours into this latest playthrough, happily and without a second thought on the matter. Somehow, the game completely fails to become stale to me.

I realize that saying Mass Effect 2 is a pretty good game is hardly an edgy stance of a critical contemporary issue. So let me spice the deal up a bit. At this point, I feel like I can talk about Mass Effect 2 in the same breath as games like Ultima 7, Fallout and Baldur’s Gate. In fact, I’d dare say that from where I’m sitting, it’s the best game BioWare has made.
If only Lord British had the tech back then to make U7 a cover-based shooter. Who knows how awesome the game would have been.

Thanks to shihonage.

Indeed. But since Ultima is still in the hands of EA, I have a feeling that we are going to find out eventually.

The article, while bad, isn’t nearly as atrocious as the comments.

Bethesda and Bioware are currently taking turns owning my life. I really wish they would stop making such great games. I need my life back. Please. P.S.
Thanks for using the Femshep for the art. I still have no idea who that Guy Pierce look-a-like they keep calling "Commander Shepard" is?

WTF is this Guy thinking. Quality games? And ME being better than Ulima or Fallout. I know they have to pay server bills and whatnot, but there are some limits to turning tricks for EA.
Guess I was wrong. I’m not going to dignify it with further comment. Instead I’ll go smash my head a couple of times against the desk. At leas this may accomplish something good.

According to "Gamers With Jobs" (probably):
Michael Bay movies = Horrible cinematic garbage
Michael Bay movies with Paragon/Renegade branching dialogues = BEST, MOST DEEPEST GAME EVAR

But at no point does he explain what those games have in common with ME2. He makes ME2 sound like an action adventure game, which is exactly what it is.

It becomes more than a game to you; it becomes part of your gamer identity.
I'm not sure what a "gamer identity" is, but I'm pretty sure I'm too old to have one.

I agree, but that probably says more about Bioware's other games than it does ME2

There are so many shooters around that ME does not realy stand out. It feels and plays just like the rest, why is this guy so excited about it? He makes it sound like all games should be shooters only and that would be a terrible world to live in.
