I was always intrigued by these. Do these really are the goofy, whimsical side-projects that they look to be? Do they have solid gameplay and a meaty main quest to back it all up?

Also, just running Savage Empire to check, but nothing shows up when DosBox is in full screen. I had the same problem with Ultima VII GOG for some reason.

They are even more adventure game-like than the mainline Ultima series. Don't expect any meaty RPG mechanics. Savage Empire has lots of crafting and interactivity. Fiddle around with everything, try to discover things yourself without spoilers. The games' plots are great, especially Martian Dreams.

Ultima IV has been free, in one form or another, since the late 90's.
