There are a new batch of screenshots of Nival's science fiction and paranormal themed RPG Night Watch. Nival shows that they can at least produce decent graphics in their games and their Silent Storm series picked up a few turn-based combat fans. If they can cram in some good role-playing options too, then it could be a hit. Enjoy the pretty.

That's why they tell you to keep them on a leash at all times.

H&S has been released in Russia some months ago. Perhaps some of the Russian posters here (like Balor) have played it and may come with their comments or even a review.

As to Night Watch, it looks very promising as a modern TB combat game but I am not expecting too much in the role-playing department. We may receive some freedom of choice and non-linear game play (similar to SS), but I would not rely on very good dialog and engaging story. Actually, I cannot recall a single RPG with a good dialog developed outside NA (at least in the last few years).

Has anyone seen the movie or read the books?

I have read the only the first part of the trilogy (Night Watch) as it is the only one available in my country so far. The book, while not as deep as Dune for example, is still quite interesting and original.

The movie, on the other hand, is something different. Not that it is a bad movie, but I don’t think that it will appeal to many people outside Russia or the East European countries (as they are well acquainted with the Russian cinema). The movie has some nice actors, good humor and interesting director’s decisions, but as a Hollywood blockbuster wannabe it fails miserably. And it is only loosely based on the book (though Sergey Lukyanenko is credited as a co-writer of the screenplay).

That sounds good, I'm actually looking forward to seeing the movie. As for the game, let's see how it turns out, but I don't hold much hope for a game based on a movie, which is based on a book... On the other hand the setting looks quite interesting.

Is this based on the awesome movie with the same name? It isn't often that license-games are RPGs is it 8^)

I believe it's all meant to be the same license, yes.

Well, yes and no. It's based on the mentioned movie, just not first, but second episode (which is almost ready).
The movie is indeed different from the book, and, I fear, worse. (If not bad by itself) However, second part promises to be better, though.
Anyway, Night Watch is worse (as a book) then Day and Twilight watches.
In the Day Watch, there is one of the best representations of the philosophy of the Darkness in the literature, barring some errors on the Lukianenko part (Vasiliev - co-author of the Day Watch understands it much better).
If they'll not mince it, I wonder what those retards that named Star Wars "Satanic" will say about this movie. :D
On the other hand, since Day Watch will be produced in cooperation with Fox... ouch.
Political correctness and ‘Christian morality’ will do this movie no good.

The books are great, hopefully the political intrigues will move over to the game and it will not be simple hack&slash.
The movie was ok, but I would shoot the guy who did editing for it, maybe this will be "cleaned" up in international release.
Those that have read the trilogy also should check out Лик Черной Пальмиры by co-author Vasilyev, events of this book are happening between Day Watch and Twilight Watch.

Do you think it will all translate well? The subtle parts in a story often do not survive all the changes during translation. Even without a language translation it's difficult to keep the essence of a book or movie when converting it to another form.

It depends how good the translators and voice actors are. There is not a lot of information on the plot so it is difficult to say how the game will turn out.
Edit: Nival will be using actors from movie to do voiceovers, which is a good thing IMO.

Well that is good news then. Bad voiceovers can ruin things, or at the very least annoy.

I'm looking forward to this game.

Seems much of what I'm looking forward to on the PC is coming from Russia :(

Well, at least this is about russian version (the voiceovers), which according to the news has reached the end of beta stage, I do hope english version will get good treatment.

Could the same actors work for both versions? It'd be a shame if they made a good game that was hamstringed by the translation or an inferior choice of actors, though if they have any sense they will include subtitles anyway.

Subtitles would be good, but I can bet your average Joe ain't gonna read them and localisation most likely will be in the hands of European/USA distributiors, well you do the math ...
I really do hope it will get good care since the universe is interesting and way better then the generic fantasy settings.

It's the non standard setting that has me interested. People can make a good game with the usual goblins and elves, but a fresh setting peaks my interest much more.
