Odd, if I can remember correctly, its been awhile, didn't they have Richard Garriot's permission to do the Ultima remake? But then again it was going to free too...

Richard Garriott's permission is irrelevant since he's not at Origin anymore (hell, Origin doesn't even exist anymore) and doesn't have the Ultima liscence. EA has got it.
