Windows Vista seems to have something against <a href=http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/>Spiderweb Software</a>'s spiffy Avernum titles, so updated versions for both <a href=http://www.avernum.com/avernum/techsupp.html>Avernum</a> and <a href=http://www.avernum.com/avernum2/techsupp.html>Avernum 2</a> which solve the party creation issues have been released.

Those too lazy to get the updated version may try to get by with this simple workaround suggested by Jeff Vogel:
<br>
<br>
<blockquote>
<br>
1. Right-click on the game shortcut on the desktop.
<br>
2. Select Properties on the menu that appears.
<br>
3. Select the Compatibility Tab.
<br>
4. Select the "Run this program in compatibility mode" check box.
<br>
5. Select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" from the menu below.

People were too silly to at least try the obvious option of compatibility mode before complaining? Tsk.

Do Spiderweb games work under Wine?
Yes, they do.
There's an annoying mouse slowdown in various windows (like inventory, character screen, world map in GF), but otherwise no problems.
I also had some odd font problems in A3 but was able to fix them by replacing TTF files with originals from Wintendo XP.

It's OK, I usually use my own sound :) Although I recently played Avernum 2 on a Pentium 120 laptop (so no audio in background) with sound turned on and the clicks somehow managed to create a nice atmosphere.

Nice to hear the games work under Linux! I'll try them with my favourite Knoppix.

Tweaked audio settings and sound is now working.
P.S. The game is Geneforge 4 demo.
