There have been too many card games lately, I propose a moratorium until at which time they become novel again.

Black Book is Coming Out on Aug 10, 2021

Hey everyone!

Black Book came a fairly long way to this point: we ran a successful Kickstarter campaign, launched the prologue, and spent lots of time developing and polishing the game over the past year. You, in turn, have been supporting us all the way, inspiring us to keep working tirelessly. It’s been a long, sometimes tough, yet exciting and fruitful road — and this road is finally coming to a finish line now.

We’re extremely delighted to announce that Black Book will be launching on all platforms on August 10 @ 10AM PT, which happens to be the 222nd day of the year 2021!

Actually, this may come as no surprise for those of you who have been actively following us here/on Twitter — remember our last 3 posts with random (at first glance) pictures? Well, those posts were the hints — try looking at them with the information you’ve got now, you’ll be quite surprised, promise :)

The game will cost $24.99 (€24.99, £19.99), and you will be able to get it with a 15% discount during the first week after the release.

Black Book will feature a full English voiceover, extensive story dialogues consisting of more than 150k words, and more than 20 hours of gameplay. Also, there’ll be a Supporter pack available for $10, including soundtrack and digital artbook. Exciting, right?

We hope that you’re looking forward to the release as much as we are — we can assure you that this long wait has been worth it. Really, you’ll see it for yourself very soon!

Here is what you can do if you don't want to miss the release:
  1. Press "Add to wishlist" and "Follow" buttons if you haven't yet.

Hey there!

The last month of the summer is here, which means that Black Book launch is right around the corner. We decided to dedicate this update to one of the in-game mechanics that also happens to be a real card game — Durak.

Remember to wishlist Black Book if you don’t want to miss the approaching release (coming in 8 days, to be exact)!

There is one highly popular card game in Russia that virtually everyone knows how to play. It’s called Durak (translated as “Fool” in English), and it’s a traditional past-time activity all over, for young and senior players alike. It has a pretty quick pace and is enjoyable to play.

In Black Book, Vasilisa can also play Durak mini-game with her companions and less than hostile foes. Let’s take a short look into what kind of card game that is, how it plays, and what you can expect from it during your playthrough of Black Book.

History of Durak

The first recorded accounts of Durak date to the 18’th century in Russia. While there certainly were other card games, they were mostly enjoyed among the high society - poker, solitaire, and bridge. Simple folk took a liking to Durak, and by 20th’ century, it became more popular than poker.

Préférence, 1879, by Viktor Vasnetsov

None can say why Durak (Fool) is called the way it is. At the time, this was one of the most common swearing words around, and since the point of the game is to find a loser among the players, it is suggested that it became the case to call the loser just that - a fool.

The original Durak is rather straightforward and simple in terms of rules. Later on, people started to mix extra rules and produce more interesting and dynamic variations of Durak. One of them is Perevodnoy Durak (a-la Reverse Durak), where you can pass the need to defend to the next player if your card rank matches the one sent your way.

There is also a special variation of Durak (Japanese Durak) where spades can only be beaten by other spades, and diamonds are always the trumps.
How is Durak played?

To win, you have to play your hand against your opponents until you run out of cards in the deck. The player that has the most cards at the end of the game ends as the Durak - or Fool. There is no strict winner in the game of Durak, only the loser.

What you can see in the picture above is a deck of cards laid out to play Durak. 1 - the deck from which players draw their cards, with the one card face-up that is used a trump suit. 2, 3, and 4 - six cards are given to each player after shuffling the deck at the beginning of the game.

Trump cards

64ebd65db9ade359b37994219f13d63b735f1e1e.gif

The trump suit can beat any other suit regardless of their rank. The player with the trump card of the lowest rank begins the round.

Bouts

The turns are usually taken clockwise. An attacker deals a card (or multiple cards, if they’re of the same rank) against their opponent. Other players can pitch in with their own cards, so long as they’re of the same rank, potentially swarming the defender with cards. However, it’s forbidden to place more cards against the defender than the number they currently have in hand.

If Perevodnoy Durak is played, the defender can pass along the cards and the need to defend to another player, if they have the card of the same rank they are dealt with. For example, if you get a Queen of spades during defense, you can use your own Queen of hearts to pass the defense to another player. They would have to defend against both of these cards, and not you.

The defender has to use either the card of the higher rank with the correct suit (e.g: beating a 9 of spades with a 10 of spades) or by using a card of the trump suit (e.g: beating an Ace of spades with a 6 of Hearts if its a trump suit).

Standard play of Durak in Black Book

If the defender is unable to beat the cards dealt to them, they have to take it into their hand. If they manage to defend, they draw from the deck until their hand has 6 cards remaining again. The defender then attacks the next player.

General rules

The game can be played with 36 or 52 cards. It can have up to 6 players for a 36 card deck. However, 6 players starting the round with 36 cards isn’t exactly a fair game, because the first player to deal has a tremendous advantage over their opponents. Sometimes, it’s viable to use multiple card decks during play.

Discarded cards are placed into a separate pile and are not used until the round is over.

The loser deals the next round.

Playing Durak in Black Book

In Black Book, you will be playing a standard version of Durak. But! Since you are playing against more than just mere peasants, your opponents will bring an extra twist into the way Durak is played. In Cherdyn, this kind of Durak is called “Witching Durak”. You and your opponents both have a way to gain an upper hand.

Switch - get a trump card

As you gain experience, you will be able to switch a random card in your hand into a trump card. This will be extra handy when playing against demons because they can and will do that against you.

Getting a trump card out of nowhere in Black Book

Peek - see the enemy’s hand

A few choice words and the cards of your opponents will reveal themselves to you. Be careful, however, this ability is extremely useful and should be saved for later. Sometimes, after all, the demons wager for your very soul…

And that’s how you play Durak, in real life and in Black Book! Join Vasilisa on her perilous adventure across Cherdyn, discover what fate has in store for her, and don’t forget to stop by and enjoy an occasional bout of Durak.

Playing дурак with my друзья was a favorite childhood pastime.
But seeing as I still don't know what kind of rpg this will be, I'd prefer if they talked about the game itself more and not about games within the game.
I guess marketing is also required.

Learn about Spells, Curses & Magical Combat
There is but a single day left until Vasilisa will begin her journey! Black Book is releasing in less than 24 hours and we couldn’t be more excited for you to try the game. We are more than confident that it will be an amazing experience.

With Black Book’s release drawing ever so near, the demonic manuscript ruffles, revealing more intricate and ancient designs, pages upon pages of curses and blessings...words of power.

Let’s take a deeper look at the combat system in Black Book — the way Vasilisa combines zagovors (or spells) together to protect herself from harm, and deal harm in return against her demonic enemies.
The Black Book

The Black Book is your main instrument in battle. It is a powerful artifact that lets you manage your own deck of spells and combine them together for additional effects. The book has several seals, each one unlocked after a certain stage of the game is reached, thus letting you use progressively more powerful spells.

8aba53a270d9cc9bf0759a93087a7e455d5746ec.png

Your starting deck, which will grow much larger over time.

As your mastery of the dark arts grows, you will be able to use more cards during your turn and compound their effects better. During your travels, you will be able to get new spells by winning or buying them.

The combat itself is arranged in turns; in most cases, Vasilisa takes the first turn by using different spells, or pages, of the Black Book, and then her enemies make their move, each casting their own spell or ability.

Offense

The night is dark but your words are darker, just like the Black pages you recite to inflict damage. Offensive spells come in many flavors, with a whole variety of unique effects. Even the toughest enemies that strike despair into the heart of seasoned witches will fall...if you play your cards right. Twist, churn, bend, and set enemies ablaze — they will regret daring to cross your path.

3ac5df736bc655a12cbefd10d4764c6037d67fcb.gif

Out of many unique effects you can utilize in battle, a few deserve some spotlight:

  • Vampirism
  • Damage-over-time
  • Curses that prevent positive effects
  • Damage to all enemies
  • Berserk spells

Black pages often synergize together to form truly fearsome zagovors. Take caution, however, some spells are so terrible and vile, casting them leaves a mark on your soul, pushing you closer to the abyss...

Defense

Fiercer than any beast, your enemies are born of Hell and seek to inflict misery, pain, and death. Without protection, you won’t last long in a battle against even a weak demon, much less so against more powerful beings. To protect yourself, the Black Book has White pages — blessings, wards, and words of light — all of which you can use to shield yourself from harm.

227cdb06f14d2922a749fd5a70d7fc552a527b5f.gif

Again, the effects are many and I wouldn’t want to spoil the fun; here’s a little of what you can expect to buff yourself with during battles:

  • Damage absorption
  • Effect boosters
  • Card swapping
  • Temporary invincibility
  • Status effect reversal

You will have to seek a balance between offense and defense, point out the weak spots in your enemy’s behavior, and time your cards right.

Consumables

The magic of the world is not within one’s soul only — it is within every living being. The earth provides, and you should take — herbs, roots, leaves, and flowers, each with its own magical effect you often wouldn’t find elsewhere.

Consumable items often provide a crucial edge in tough fights, and maybe the only thing standing between you and certain death. Stock up at the herbalist, or seek these items on your own during your many travels around Cherdyn.

Artifacts

If herbs siphon magic from the ground, various artifacts have concentrated it from humans and spirits alike, becoming ever so potent in their magical capacity. Upon your travels, you will come across many trinkets, charms, and items of magical power that will prove to be extremely useful in and outside combat.

b17a405305493653f3a7a6c526659dbe1bfb2d3d.png

...trinkets and baubles, paid for in gold...

Keep a watchful eye for the items of value, and don’t forget that any time you happen to visit a fair, there is a merchant with the most curious goods near one of the stands.

Discover your own approach to dealing with danger while playing as Vasilisa in Black Book! Prepare ahead of your journey with herbs and trinkets, form a deck of cards strong enough to slay a god, and venture out in the dark of the night.

Cherdyn awaits!

After playing the prologue I can say that this game is cool as fuck. I think I'll buy this and continue. There's a bundle thought with Stoneshard and I'm not sure about that one...

I find it interesting how they use different cover art per region/language. It's like that old times.

This is interesting indeed but unfortunately, at least in the prologue, Vasilisa look exactly like in English version i.e. the worse of the three in my view. However, maybe her appearance will change depending on the story and her sins count, that would be absolutely awesome :fabulouslyoptimistic:

Overall though the art-style, more specifically execution is lacking but it's a matter of budget, what can you do. Same goes for voice-over - amateurish in general, hit and miss all over and this isn't a game where turning it off would be a good idea I think.

Cool game with impressive C&C for an indie title. You can hex people, curse objects, typical witch stuff, the more evil you are the more you gain power. However choices are not clear cut and choices you make that you think will lead to good might end up being evil while evil choices might end up being good. Witcher 1 vibes.

This game is fucking amazing. Sure, 3d models look like TOTAL ASS and some of 2d assets look meh as well but again: it is an obvious budget issue, nothing you can do. Art-style is still great and carries much visuals wise and the the usual ambient is also great by the way. But when it comes to conveying complicated Russian northen folklore and telling this extensive grim fairytale - it simply awesome. I'm like 30% through so who knows, maybe it won't hold my interest untill the finale but so far I'm really hooked. Imagine greedily reading "lore" section in any game (besides that you already know of course).

The card game aspect itself is pretty good too, max difficulty provide some challenge although it's too early to judge since I've seen only 2 out of 7 "circles" of cards. Funny story: my deck is heavily relies on blessings stacking currently and in the middle of another little scenario I got yet another "imp" (no idea how it's translated, the thing about them is that each of them give you a debuff unless you send them to do some "work" but you can do so only in between scenarios) and turns out that his debuff is... complete and permanent denial of blessings. Basically if there wouldn't be possible to switch difficulty on a fly I would be sooo fucked. After few attempts at building a deck with what I had, I switched it to easy and skipped the last boss entirely, so I'm a filthy casual now, officially.

P.S. I'm playing on Russian so have no idea how it was all translated, voiced and how different it can be perceived in general for eng-speakers.

I agree, the game is pretty good, would recommend it for sure. Good story, good voice acting, nice slav folk tales in it. Card fights fine, allows different builds, also there is some decent rpg elements. The worst part is the shitty puzzle fights,if they cut them out the game will be better for it. And sadly, yet again the codex shows it self as place filled with posers that come only to bitch about politics or hyped normie garbage. Sad!

What?! I strongly disagree - that's the best part, card game aspect speaking. Otherwise I'm rollling over everything (minus that cuck-imp fiasco) even on max level so far (pretty sure blessings are kinda busted although I didn't properly tried other "archetypes" yet) but with puzzles you have to actually stop and think, try stuff. And remember: you can simply skip fights on easy via menu so it can be hardly called as shortcoming anyway.
