RPGWatch have taken a look back on Divine Divinity and told you why it's an awesome game and you should totally play it:

One of the quirky 'top whatever' lists that appears every now and then is the list of worst names for video games. And somewhere on every one of those lists is Divine Divinity. Yeah, it IS pretty obvious why.

The game would also appear on another list - if some one could figure out how to name it. That list would be 'best deep role playing game that fans of classic RPG's have ignored because it features action-RPG combat and has a very difficult and long dungeon in the beginning.' So you can see I won't be getting a job naming lists anytime soon. Point is, this is a game that many RPG fans tried the demo and felt it was just yet another Diablo Clone and left it behind. Something about the old saying 'you only get one chance to make a first impression' springs to mind.

...

I say that they missed out because shortly before entering the last level of that dungeon you come upon a scene that reflects much of what will happen for the rest of the game - an existential discussion between skeletons about what is holding them together and how they can even talk without any connective tissue or lungs. Their self-realization is their demise, and then you return to the massive dungeon. Soon after this, you encounter a section that is typical of the game: scenes and dialog full of humor and pathos, coupled with a frantic and furious battle that will probably take you more than one try to survive.

Mmmm... Existential.

Funny Im playing through this right now, and I agree it is a very good game.

I was also originally turned off by the diablo style hack and slash combat, but if you can get by that, it really is a pretty good game. I love the visual feel of the 2D graphics and the sound and music is very good.

The first dungeon wasn't that hard. I actually played thought the demo twice, I enjoyed it so much. I do agree that that dungeon is why so many people label it as a Diablo clone and move on. I knew it was more than that from my first minutes in Aleroth. :D

I tried it and after few hours of Diablo hack and slash I was too bored to continue. I don't believe anything can fix that.

I actually think I managed to get outside the main village and I got to some king or a guy... or kid... don't remember anymore. I do remember he told me I smell of sweat though hehe. Anyway, there was some graveyard near there and there is where I quit. I think I ve seen more than enough of what the game can offer. If I haven't please tell me for I still have it in my collection and I could maybe play it one day if it is more than hack and slash.

My main memory of DD is slashing my way through the first dungeon just to exit it and having to fight billions of orcs. *yawn* First town showed some potential; but that was enough to realize the game was all about combat and any potential story or role-playing goodness would be wasted on murdering billions of enemies.

Glad to see this game's getting some well deserved love these days. It's one of my favorites, a little gem that shocked me with how good it was. Best RPG of 2002 most definitely.

It's one main flaw is the large amount of hack and slash combat, but I like all the other stuff. Except for the voice overs, I turn the voices off and just read the dialog.

I love how the world is so interactive which used to be the norm in games it seems until we went to 3D, in certain areas cats will chase down and kill chickens or rabbits and squirrels. :)

If I recall correctly the cathedral has a huge amount of enemies to slog though, so im going to get my character at a bit higher level before entering in the hopes it will be a bit easier.

Having just played this recently, I have to say I agree with most of the article.

It's actually a very good RPG, lots of detail, awesome music, good graphics and there were some very cool quests that didn't require tons of combat.

The best thing about the game is that the game world feels alive and cohesive. I love the design of the game map, it's well laid out and freakin huge. And it feels like there actually is a conflict with the number of orcs you come across.

I also love that the designers didn't take themselves or the genre too seriously.

Haven't finished it yet though, so my opinion isn't final - but so far it's been fun and a pleasant surprise.

Have to add: I don't think you have to finish that first dungeon right off the bat. I covered about 50% of it just to get strong enough to make it to the first town and then finished the dungeon when I was stronger, after the rest of the game world made a positive impression. Or else I would have quit playing - that dungeon was MUCH too large for a "starter" dungeon.

This is probably a bad idea and a waste of time but what the hell...
What is the best RPG of 2002, Volourn?

If I know Volo one of the Bioware games :)

Mass Effect review by Volo:
First town - Citadel (FIXED) showed some potential but that was enough to realize the game was all about combat and any potential story or role-playing goodness would be wasted on murdering billions of enemies - ALIENS (FIXED).

i never played the demo but the rest rings true, its one of my favourite under-dog games for PC and i reccomend it to anyone who's trying to enjoy a slightly different game from the usual d&d or trying to break from diablo to torment/fallout/etc.

Good or bad, how is it any different than any (A)RPG? It has combat, it has story, it has characters, and all that. Not different. L0L

"What is the best RPG of 2002, Volourn?"

On, come on. You've been reading me spam hjere for how long and you can't figure out what game I liked from 2002? Give me a fuckin' break, and you a brain transplant.

All this talk has got me interested in DD, so I may give this hack/slash game another shot. It obviously can't be any worse than what games offer today and it will be good to change from 3D world to 2D world. But I seriously doubt DD was the best RPG game of 2002 which was a very strong year when it comes to RPGs. I don't know how the critics accepted it, but from what I can remember Arx Fatalis, Morrowind and Gothic 2 came out 2002 (although I don't like Gothic, I know a lot of people here love it). Don't forget Icewind Dale 2, NWN, for those who don't mind jRPG Kingdom Hearts, etc...

A damn good year for PC gaming and I really wonder where things went wrong?

Hmm, from those games you listed I think I like DD as much as any of them with the exception of maybe morrowind.

"I thought it was well-established everyone except you is dumb."

Nah. Everyone who disagrees with me is dumb. Not EVERYONE.
