The official Dungeon Siege 2 website has been updated with the feature of a new monster called the Dark Naiad.

Naiads, like other pets, are otherworldly creatures that mages have summoned to our own through magical rifts. They are spirits of life and growth, and their incredible healing powers are in high demand among adventuring parties. Dark Naiads are the most common variety, as they have a somewhat disturbing sadistic streak that draws them to the excitement of adventuring. Light Naiads are rumored to exist, but if they do, they are shy and reclusive, and will not assist any adventurers except the most worthy.

Ugh.

I watched the gameplay videos they have, and something really struck me. As they're demoing it, the voiceover is talking about how they added more story, and cut down on the monsters-every-5-feet. But as he was talking, the video was ALL MONSTERS, with maybe a 10 second break at a checkpoint while he told a password to a gatekeeper. Now, I never played the first game, so I can't compare it, but if the developer doing the voiceover genuinely felt that the new game was NOT a hack-fest, well, the first game must have just been insane. I mean, to think that killing 150 critters in the course of a 10 minute demo was NOT hack-n-slash -- jeeze. The original must have been, what, maybe 500 critters per 10 minutes? WTF?

Anyway, I'm glad to see game demos. If I just followed what the developer was writing on the Web site, I'd have been convinced it was everything I wanted -- heavy story, light warfare, cool tactics & strategy, multiple branching storylines. In reality, that's just the crack they're smoking. The game is just slogging through waves of bouncing, hopping, squealing enemies, with all of the difficulty and intellectual challenge of Diablo II. Maybe even less so.

It's still a hack fest, no doubt about it. But hopefully it'll be more than just a hack fest, and more importantly: the hack fest should be fun and interactive, this time around. The first game was a screensaver.

You know a game is going to be solid gold when they include ugly monsters in bikinis.

Maaaaaan, I wish they would stop showing me stuff about this game. The only thing that has me excited is the weapons. Its like each time they show me something my interestometer drops a notch (except the weapons). ;) The saving grace is multiplayer coop, as that goes along way to make even the most tedious games worthwhile, I mean I played Dungeon Siege 1 in coop, probably the only reason I completed, and it was fun.
