GI.n has conducted an interview with Irrational Ken Levine covering the subject of his latest game, Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich. The interview doesn't talk about anything new, but here's a couple of stupid questions:

GamersInfo.net: Any chance we'll ever see a Freedom Force movie? How about novels or comic books? What about an MMO based-in the Freedom Force universe?

Ken Levine: Funny that you should mention that. You can pick up issue 1 and 2 of the all-new Freedom Force comic by Image Comics. Look for it in stores now! Eric Deiter's writing and Tom Scioli's art really capture the spirit of the game with impeccable precision. Freedom Force fans and comic fans won't be disappointed.

Nice dodge. I can tell Ken Levine and his pals at Irrational aren't huge fans of MMOs.

GamersInfo.net: Has City of Heroes been an influence on the team at all? What about the recent spate of superhero films such as the Spider-man and X-men series?

Ken Levine: A few of us have played CoH. I can't really say that it's influenced us since it's so different in genre, aesthetic and overall execution. The resurgence of comic book films has certainly been inspiring. They'd probably inspire us regardless of what type of game we were working on. In general, they've been great films that leverage many of the same elements that make games engaging.

I honestly can't see what the big deal is with CoH.

It's the ideal fantasy of anyone who obsesses over Marvel comics, hence them suing.

Personally, I can't see what the big deal is with Freedom Force. Unless I played a completely different game from everyone else, I remember the original as being an RTS with a good amount of character customization.

I suppose I should try out the demo just to see what the fuss is all about in case I'm completely wrong (it wouldn't be the first time, after all ).

It's just fun and original and the character stuff is great. The sequel's looks are pretty amazing (they do the comic look perfectly) and its even more fun then the first. Enhanced multiplayer and stuff too.

I played only 2 missions of the first one, which I got this week after buying it on the Codex's recommendation. I feel nothing but pure, unadulterated joy and love for this game. I may be betrayed later, but watching those cutscenes of the origin of the Minuteman and the spaceship dropping Energy X on Earth I had the hugest stupid grin on my face that wouldn't go away.

The game itself is nice too, of course ;) Though I still haven't got the "hang" of it, especially with the secondary objectives of the second mission (when Mentor shows up). Can anyone help out?

Not going to happen. If anything, the early missions are rather crappy compared with what's to come.

Which reminds me of how totally blown away I was when I got to the fight on top of the skyscraper and realized you could actually "Fall off" or better yet be "knocked off".

I rather felt the same way about it myself. :) Remind me what the secondary objectives of the second mission are? As I recall, one of them is not alerting the guards, which can be tricky, but it is possible. It's been awhile since I played the game, but I'm pretty sure I can remember how to solve them.

yeah, it's the not alerting the guards thing that has me stumped. Plus I dislike a tiny bit the fact that the thugs only appear when you're close, so you really have to do a bit of hunt the pixel to get the "knock out all thugs" objective.

Not alerting the guards is actually rather easy if you don't care about the other secondary objective. If you do however, that's where it gets tricky. Always approach thugs from behind, and only use standard attack but pump up the intensity to ensure max damage capability. If you use the knockback attack, it can throw the thugs into the guard's field of vision, thus alerting them.

No. The guards are not on the map until alerted. Those little sheds placed here and there with red lights on them are the guardhouses. If you get within their visual range or knock a bad guy into their visual range, they will be alerted to your presence and like 5 - 8 guys will come running out of the place to lay the smackdown on your ass.

I can get into their visual range just fine. One of my sucessful attempts involved sneaking behind one such guardhouse, climb on top of it, use the minute missile from the roof of it, jump down in front of it, and knock the badguys before they came to and reached the house themselves.

It sounds like you have the situation well in hand, Astromarine, just save after every successful disabling of a guardhouse and reload if you have to. You can also destroy the guardhouses after you clear them if you're concerned about someone running back to it.

Yep, that's one of the things I really like about Freedom Force, you can destroy just about anything or use it for a weapon. Granted, in the missions you usually don't want to destroy buildings because it counts against your prestige score, but in the skirmish mode...hehe...
