My 2nd favorite grand theft auto game, only behind vice city. A seminal and culturally transcendent game. Tons of fun and incredible for the time.

Discuss GTA SAN ANDREAS.

I'll admit I never made it further than following the damn train.

Is there a cheat code to skip the difficult missions?

It's been 15 years since I've played it, but I don't remember it being that hard. Took me a few tries for sure, but nothing worth pulling your hair over. All the 3D era GTA games have their share of bullshit missions, but once you figure out how to approach them they're usually pretty easy. Maybe watch a Youtube video or something.

I spent a lot of time playing SA, even made some mods for it, but overall it didn't leave as strong an impression as either 3 or Vice City. Iirc the missions in the later part of the game are kind of boring. It has the best sandbox gameplay of the franchise, though. I really wish we'd gotten a Stories game.

One thing I really enjoyed in GTA San Andreas was that you had gang-banger and mafia (?) types who would either spawn in having chases with one another or would have a bad enough 'reaction score' with one another to get into chases and firefights. You also saw the same with police chases of bank robbers, escaped prisoners etc. and with ambulances and fire trucks. Following along was a blast. I also enjoyed renting a house in the redwoods out in the countryside and doing long-haul trucking missions.

While it's not a popular opinion, I did prefer the simulationist physics, gunfighting, driving, and health/damage models of GTA 4. But the open world of San Andreas felt more alive, dynamic and fun than any of the others as far as I can remember.

I feel so much at home when looking at screenshots from this game.
Is it the escapism I felt from an isolated childhood? Also there is some kind of "liminal space" feel in this game. Just as much as in early Tomb Raider games (1-6)
Fuck, I can fly around these streets like a "free camera" in my head and I know every detail and layout of the streets.

I played San Andreas on PC. Maybe there was something about keyboard and mouse that made the mission more difficult? I don't remember.

I'd play it again.

San Andreas made me think I liked GTA games. Of course, I played it when I was young and easily impressed by the (what we kids at the time thought as) next gen mechanics. You had stamina, muscle, hunger meter, sex appeal etc. You had separate skill meters for different types of guns and vehicles. You had horse race betting, burglary and sky diving. At the time I thought that every game will have these from now on and that the more shit a game has, the better it is. Later I found out that for me, GTA games are barely more than the sum of its parts, the parts themselves being mediocre. All missions boil down to "drive somewhere and shoot someone" and I don't think the driving or shooting mechanics are very good. The only part that I still like is the soundtrack, so nowadays when I replay it I just drive around and listen to the radio.

By the way, did you know that San Andreas had an intro mini-movie? It's a bit boring but does provide some details that the game doesn't have.

This, along with Planescape: Torment, is the game I played to completion more than any other game. And in the following titles from the series, you can't even overstuff your nigger with fast food to make him comically obese, or diligently tone him at the gymnasium to make him ripped. What gives? It speaks DECLINE with all caps.
