Jolt has posted a first look at the most anticipated title in the known universe: Hellgate London!

Hellgate: London is a first-person action RPG, but the main thing that sets it apart from almost every other RPG is that the world, quests, items and events are all randomly generated (to a certain degree).
That's hilarious. Yes, never before have we heard of such a wonderful concept! I like the ending: EVARYTHING IS RANDOMIEZED!!1! (BUT NOT REALLY!)

It’s also set in the modern day (well, 25 years from now to be precise) and aims to have more action-oriented gameplay than the traditional fare, combing hacking, slashing, shooting and blasting with a far more immersive viewpoint.
Apparently it's also the first action RPG evar! Gaming journalism at its finest.

How is it a "first look" when PC Gamer, IGN and some other shit places have already previewed it.

Going to Jolt for good gaming news is like reading Maxim for the articles. Or reading maxim at all. Whatever.

Its pleasure to read some usual bitching about usual game industry PR honey-shit again. I thought we will have to embrace only Rex's viewpoint and have to be converted to Hellgate fanbois.

This game confuses me. Have they found a way to actually make a first-person combat system that blends player skill and character skill? Or will it just end up as a horrible mess which satisfies neither rpg or fps requirements?

Well, first of all, it's not really an FPS so your l33t AWPing skills don't really help.

It's a roguelike (or Diablo-like) in a first person viewpoint for guns, and a 3rd person viewpoint for melee weapons. There isn't any locational damage and most likely, the game has some built in auto-aim reticle that targets all of the enemies close to the center of the screen so your shots fly to them. I've seen this system in Freelancer, and it was the only good thing about that game.

Just think of it as a kind of three dimensional Ultima Underworld 2 with lots, and lots, and lots of monsters. And third person combat.

I know it's not an fps. It is, apparantly, a first-person action RPG with randomisation (to a certain degree), set in modern times (well, 25 years in the future to be exact).

Possibly an auto-aim feature? Never played Freelancer so I can't make a comparison there.

Everything I've read and seen so far makes it look ideal for a LAN hack'n'slash. But first-person creates its own problems for combat. I'd imagine you'll be using the first-person view and combat a lot as the game is being sold as a "first-person action RPG" as opposed to a "third-person action RPG with ranged combat being in first-person".

That makes how they do the first-person combat kind of important. It's also the thing I've seen the least info on. Why switch to a third person mode for melee but not for ranged? That's what has tingled my spider senses.

Thanks for trying to explain though Exitium.

Probably for the immersion factor like feeling claustrophobic in a dungeon. Third person with guns reminds me too much of Tomb Raider, and not in a good way.

I never understood how first person is the most immersive, I always found it kinda annoying since you look in one direction and dont see everything.

YOU CAN BE IMMERSED BECAUSE ITS LIKE YOU ARE STARING AT A TREE!!

3rd person views always done better for me, especially in Gothic 2. Wandering down a trail next to a river and noticing all the little details and seeing everything in motion > staring in one head-on direction.

Same goes for isometric, its just cooler to see everything and all the details instead of just seeing part of it right in front of your face.

There needs to be more descriptive dialog in games too, it really enhances, people should make an effort to get it in somehow. Not just enviorments, but little details like books lying around that add to the setting or objects with some sort of descriptive aid added on that enrich.

One thing I thought was neat in Blades of Avernum is when you are going through the ruined school with the area full of gremlins, all the books and stuff are destroyed except one you come across: the medical log of people who got hurt and how they got hurt.

The Gremlins infact read it often, because they think its great humor.
