<strong>[ Game -> Update ]</strong>

<p>Everybody's favorite site, <a title="here be niggers" target="_self" href="http://rpgvault.ign.com/">IGN</a>, has a new scoop on <a title="here be ruskies" target="_self" href="http://www.heroesofae.com/">Heroes of Annihilated Empires</a>, an RPG/RTS hybrid from those wacky Russians <a title="here be faggots" target="_self" href="http://www.gsc-game.com/">GSC Game World</a> who are supposedly working on <a title="rofl" target="_self" href="http://wasteland.duckandcover.cx/stalker/">S.T.A.L.K.E.R.</a></p>
<blockquote>
<p>Intriguingly classified as "RTS vs. RPG", <strong><em><a href="http://www.heroesofae.com/" target="_new">Heroes of Annihilated Empires</a></em></strong>
is a project that seeks to incorporate both genres rather than
combining selected elements. It first came to our attention in the
latter part of 2004. At the time, it was still early in development,
but we managed to obtain a fair amount of information from the team at
Kiev, Ukraine-based GSC Game World. For instance, it's the first part
of a planned trilogy for which the studio has created an original
fantasy-themed setting where the primary races stand on the threshold
of a conflict that could destroy them all. </p>
</blockquote>
<p>"...incorporate both genres rather than
combining selected elements." Does that mean I'll be able to kill the
Mad Dragon Vizier, pick up his phat loot, and then manage my peasants
and make sure I've collected enough magic ore to build Ye Olde Faggote
Factorye?</p>
<blockquote>
<p> Describing the game's genre as RTS vs. RPG doesn't postulate a gameplay
with just certain elements of the two genres. Instaed, it implies a
unique, by its gist, combination of two full-fledged genres, real-time
strategy and role-playing games. In Heroes of Annihilated Empires, it
will be possible to develop the chosen hero through an RPG system, as
well as to build cities, recruit armies led by the hero, as is
traditional for RTS games.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Chosen Hero, eh? Why couldn't I just be another grunt recruited into
the army rather than some stupid moronic avatar of the Gods or
whatever. Instead of building cities, I would just capture them with my
company and make improvements upon them like walls, training facilities
et cetera. That would be much better than Warcraft 3's system of
generic base-building followed by leveling your hero. which is the
pattern this game seems to be following.</p>
<blockquote>
<p>Within this environment, the goal is to provide two types of play
experiences that can be combined if you wish, but need not be. One
possible approach focuses on a hero character that can reportedly
become powerful enough to face and defeat entire armies. In the other,
you assume the role of a military commander charged with leading forces
that can eventually number many thousands of units. </p>
</blockquote>
<p>So basically it'll combine mindless hack 'n slashing with a CHOSEN
ONE or generic Warcraft-clone base-building? ROLERPLAYANG!</p><p> </p>
<p>See the mindfuck in all it's glory <a title="can't stop the signal" target="_self" href="http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/684/684775p1.html">here</a>. </p><p>Mad props to Baby Arm for linking me to the article. You're going places, kid. </p>
<p> </p>
<p> </p>

The ent, the elves, the light and dark sides, the dark tower, etc.

Who cares anyway, it'll never be released.

Again you're forgetting the hippo-lizard thing.

But yeah, I'll be surprised if it gets released due to the Stalker connection. Too bad. I like the idea of choosing RPG or RTS paths. And hippo-lizards.

Stop it with the hippo-lizard :( It just look similar, for me, to LotR. Not OMG 100% THE SAME!11!! but still.

It seems Warcraft3 really set the mark for the following RTSes. More and more games are using that bright colors thing, and a lot of RPGs are trying to blend RTS and RPG. That hero trend is spreading.

Warcraft III didn't even start the hero trend. Warlords had that way back in '98ish. All Blizzard did was take the concept, dumb it down and then add some soophah-doopah cinematics and just let the GAME O' THE YEAR awards roll in.

I didn't say Blizzard invented it with Warcraft3, but they're the ones who popularized it.

You didn't say that.
