Here's the official FAQ for the HOMM 5 open beta:
http://forums.ubi.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/1851065692/m/6981061204
Unfortunately, it reveals that you need to be a paid Fileplanet subscriber (do they exist?) for the first 3 days. Also, the beta is strictly multiplayer. No AI for you. This wouldn't be so bad if all the HOMM forum members weren't retards.

edit: Also includes free Starforce pleasuring.

We can always read beta diaries of some hardcore hommers out there (and there are plenty of them).

I'm very sceptical about Homm5, so it would take a lot of reasoning to prove me wrong.

I was one of the bitchers on Nival's forum, about 2 months ago or so.
Im not sure about UbiSoft's Homm5 forum, but Nival's is mostly inhabited by teeny fanbois (just as on Bethesda's), so I quickly got tired of it.

First off, combat system. The battlefield (at least in the demo and earlier versions) is so small, and there is so little room for tactics. I mean, why give devils the teleportation ability if it can reach its opponent by foot with the same speed, in the very beginning?

Second, they didn't do anything new with the heroes in battle. I mean, he's just there standing like always, invincible, but now the warrior gets funny attacks with no response. How cool is that? There are many ways to make this much better feature, but they chose the way of least tension, i guess. Not a major gripe here, though. Could be worse.

Design. In light of the whole series, current design is atrocious and terribly out of place. It looks like Warcraft. Mind you, I love Warcraft3 design, but I also understand that it is genuine warcraft design, that suits the world, that was planned in the first place. But here they deal with the existing franchise, with quite solid design concepts already written and drawn before them. But no, Nival's got his own way on the highway, it's rather break the integrity than adhere to it. I cannot explain why I like Homm3 design, but every one who played it will probably feel the same way: it was just way too different. It's like if Bethesda decided to make Fallout 3 in anime style, how cool woudl that be?

I had some other gripes as well, but can't remember them now ^_^ Gotta look up those threads again...

Who gives a fuck what the hell a strategy game looks like, gosh. HOMM3 wasn't that special, it was just your generic muddy 1996 fantasy pictures. Like Warlords Battlecry 1.

That's it, it was that classical fantasy art, and it had its charm. I do not expect originality when I look upon homm art, i Just like the beautiful and organic design that perfectly complements the theme and overall game design. And with the outstanding soundtrack, the effect is staggering.
And yes, I give a fuck how a game looks like, from an artist's perpective. This is not graphic whoring. Graphic whoring is when you seek fancy pictures as substitutes for everything else; in homm3, however, there is a perfect symbiosis.

it's the same kind of charm that clipart has in that it's incredibly old and cheesy.

and you're a lame artist anyways. commie.
