Jagged Alliance - how to install on Windows XP?

Feeling a craving from some good tactical combat and never having played the legendary Jagged Alliance, I borrowed the JA CD version 1.13 from a friend of mine.
When I try to install it in insists on trying to install to drive F, which if course generates a critical error message, since drive F is listed as a DVD drive and I don't even have a physical drive F. I tried to install from both drives C and J, J being an external hard drive, but got the same error message.

Any ideas?

Have you tried this version here?

I never played the first one (went straight to JA2).

Thanks, that version works, but the voice acting seems to be missing, assuming there *is* voice acting?

I'm a bit anal, so I always have to play the first version first.

Forget about that version, it trimmed down to 9mb. You got the cd. Just install VDMSound and open the install file on CD with VDMSound. It should install. Once installed, you will need to run the game in compatibility mode and with VDMSound again.

Also, since you're so anal about it, there is a standalone expansion as well, Deadly Games. You can find both games on Ebay for cheap dirt. If not, torrent them. Be quick though, I just checked and only a few seeders are left.

edit: Now thinking about it, I may have installed the game through DosBox. In fact, I guess that's what I did. Mount cd drive to F, and one of your hdd drives to C and you should be set to go. Run the game with VDMSound in compatibility mode, though.

Finally got it to work!
I changed the F drive to Z and suddenly the game installer recognized my four "real" drives.
And with VDMSound the music and voice acting is working.
Now to RTFM.

Indeed. I've soloed with him I believe.

If you really insist on playing the first one first, get Dos Box. The 2nd one is so much better though.
