So I just reacquired this game after years and years of not having it and am finding it as enjoyable as I used to. Has any one else tried this cool game from Sierra?
Basically it is a turn based strategy game with real time combat from 97 or 98...not quite sure. There is you along with 7 other computer players, each representing one of the elements along with order, chaos, life, and death. Death are the strongest at the start of the game and can't be played until you have beaten death at least one time.
You start out with just a main hero and a couple of troops, you need to clear away all the bandits from your great temple in order to be given your own realm. Then you train up your troops and gain experience for them until you are strong enough to go either liberate other people's great temples (which means they will swear fealty and become part of your realm if they like you), or just conquer their stronghold and kill their main hero.
The troops available basically come in a couple of varieties (cavalry, infantry, and archers), along with a mage, thief, and warrior hero class. The cavalry, infantry and archers basically serve the same role in most cases with the infantry standing up the front and defending while the cavalry go around the back and the archers fire from behind the infantry. But there are a few racial differences that affect play styles. For instance the order and water realms have really strong cavalry, but they are really slow they are better suited to standing at the front and taking hits while their infantry basically serve as a weaker and cheaper version. The air and life realms however have really weak but fast cavalry who are much more able to flank around to attack archers around the back. The life archers however have a huge range so they are able to start firing on any enemy troops before they even get close. The life archers though have flying, which means they are able to move over inaccessible areas so that infantry and cavalry can't attack them. The warrior basically serves as an attack magnet since they have the highest attack and defense of most units, however due to the way that attacks can be interrupted they are best used to sit at the very front of your lines and get as many people to attack them as they can while your archers kill them. The thief acts like an archer although it can also go invisible to sneak around the battlefield as well as capturing enemy heroes who can then be either traded back for money or interrogated for infomation. The mage has access to a number of offensive, defensive, and overland spells that can let them attack the enemy, help your troops, or change some things on the main map, but they are limited by how much mana they get, and in most cases they don't get a lot of mana until they are a very high level. All realms also get a few unique magic units that vary a good amount, as well as being able to train an extra strong unit and the realm's champion unit at the great temple.
It's a great game in my opinion, although it can take days just to play a single game.
