One of the first fps games I played as a kid, along with doom, heretic, ROTT, quake, duke 3d ect. When I was too young to understand what to do I just ran around killing shit. Really sweet soundtrack and atmosphere, medieval mixed with futuristic.

It ended up being my favorite early 90s fps. Blasphemy bla bla well it's my opinion. I ended up beating it several times in the early 00's. Probably at least 5 times, I'm not really the type to replay many games. Usually I beat a game, sometimes play on a harder difficulty if that.

Ignore the autist in the video, but that battle scene blew my mind as a kid. quake and duke didnt have anything like that even if they were more technically impressive.

Arsenal is a bit weak, game could probably use a proper shotgun, or some type of punchy single shot rifle in between the mini rocket launcher and grenade launcher.

Notoriously bad sewer level. Funnily enough I replayed strife for the first time in like... ~18-20 years last year and I guess I memorized the sewer so thoroughly as a kid I ran right through it.

It has some very minor rpg elements, shops, small inventory system ect. You periodically get upgrades to health/accuracy/melee damage. Super basic stuff.

I shared my thoughts on the sewer level with my friend JarlFrank when I replayed it.

Civvie 11 reviews it pretty well.

What are everyones thoughts on strife?

Played it for the first time last year. Great game. It does whatever limited RPG progression it has surprisingly competently for an FPS, which is no easy feat.

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Grab the Codex by the pussy RPG Wokedex Strap Yourselves In Codex Year of the Donut Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. Pathfinder: Wrath I helped put crap in Monomyth
Really enjoyed Strife. Interesting setting and an early attempt at some hybrid gameplay. The RPG elements are pretty light, but still impressive for a 90s doom engine game.

Has that 90s voice acting charm and an energetic soundtrack.

Stopped playing it when i reached the sewers, they were just too painful for me, but until that point the game was great, like Doom with a little RPG thrown in.

Great game.
I really have to replay it, since it's been a really long time...
I remember the sewers being pretty annoying, but then again, the obligatory sewer levels were always annoying in those games back then.
Also had minor roleplay/open world elements.

When I first played Strife I had immense trouble with the difficulty of the game, the bosses usually one-shotted me.

I was forced to play the game at the easiest difficulty level to have a chance at it... but that way I finally beat it.

Looking back I can tell what was making things hard for me - I wasn't playing it with a mouse. It was probably the last FPS that I didn't play with a mouse.

I played and beat Doom 1 & 2, Heretic and Hexen without a mouse. Highest difficulty, all secrets found.

Strife was the herald of a new age, a tougher age. I needed to Git Gud, or die trying.

You absolutely must have a mouse to properly play a FPS game.
I never imagined myself not using a mouse.

It's funny you say that, I find all those game except doom 1 to be substantially harder than strife.

This only shows how old I am.

CTRL to fire the gun, hold down ALT to strafe sideways.

Makes strafing an absolute bitch.

Nigh-on impossible to do nowadays since they added the Windows-key in 1995.

EDIT: Got it backwards. Corrected.

anyway, can't recommend enough both doom rpgs for mobiles (if you can find them nowadays at all) - how cyberdemon got his techno limbs

wolfenstein rpg is even better - how cyberdemon lost his real appendages

and if you like those, try also the Orcs & Elves mobile games (fantasy themed)

My memories of Strife are not very good.
On my first try I messed up the quest involving the Governor and the Chalice.
On my second try, on Normal, I managed to run out of ammo. "This has never happened to me before".
Also I found the level design rather lacking. Too random and most of it not looking like real places.
