Obsidian sucks at making trailers

Seriously, all the SoZ trailers are worse than even the trailers for the Dungeon Lords games.

Why oh why must they merely show mundane zoomed in combat footage? It looks horribly cheap. And then they have to use the basic combat music in their promotional trailers. All their trailers consist of is some silly spell animations.

It can't be that difficult to make a good trailer for their games. Look at their MotB trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWLArDlyDJ4

There are so many great cinematic moments in MotB, so many confrontations, so many long meaningful speeches, so many epic moments, all of which can be edited together with some nice music, to create a really intense exciting trailer. And yet, their actual MotB trailer looks like that. It just doesn't remotely do justice. I mean, it's like you have a big blockbuster flick that is given a trailer that makes it look like a B-movie.

C'mon, show some skill in HYPING your game, for god's sake. Give us something nice to feed and munch on before the game comes out. Take notes from Ubisoft Montreal. It never had to make a fun game in all its time, but it just made really cool trailers with nice metal music that more than excites people to buy their game. Hell, I almost wanted to buy Far Cry 2 just because of the Barra Barra trailer. :D

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Even the trailers for PST and Arcanum showed almost only combat, even though that was the weakest part of both games.

There is something inherently wrong with trailers.

It's like they're ignoring their true fanbase and potential RPers in favor of the next gen crowd. The amusing part is that combat won't really convert any FPS whores.

I don't understand why half of the trailer couldn't show some dialogs and epic encounters. 2 birds with one stone.

The RPGer's have been following its development from day one and already pre-ordered this yesterday. Trailers have to cater to the GameTrailers crowd...hence, tits and explosions. If anyone wants to delve further, gameplay previews that show dialogue should be available.

Seeing two characters stand there with bubbles of text over their heads isn't exactly dynamic or stirring...unless one of them says "Plane tickets, bitch!" and an epic battle ensues shortly after...

Oh and they have to do that thing where you think the trailer is over but, just kidding, and a) something flies towards the screen and there's loud music and sound to scare the shit out of you or b) someone says a funny one-liner and you el-oh-el, and then it's really over.

I pretty much doubt that absolutely every RPer is interested in ZoS. There are probably a bunch of people who aren't in to gaming that much but still prefer RPGs and such over action. There's always room for conversion. The difference is that ZoS/MotB dialogs, character creation, characters etc. have a chance of attracting some attention, while the combat pretty much doesn't. Doubt that some casual interested in smart games would touch NWN 2 after their trailers, since they give an impression of some poor Diablo clone, rather than lengthy with skill checks dialogs and C&C.

Man, don't get me started on trailers. They're designed to be all BANG ZOOM WHEEE, Devil-May-Cry God-of-War kinda quick and flashy, and that doesn't work well with the NWN2 engine. The environments in the game are really amazingly goddamn gorgeous - the artists absolutely fucking outdid themselves at every turn - and those trailers don't do that justice. Also they just... I mean, depth of character creation, player involvement - it doesn't come off well that way. Trailers are by and large made to suit a theatrical perspective - patterned off action movies especially - and that DOES NOT WORK for most games.

/sigh. I miss Cinematech, one of the few good shows on G4 back in the day. They'd show some trailers, sure, but most of all they showed GAMEPLAY. That was what really got me interested in the titles they displayed - which often WEREN'T the latest-greatest-big-budget whatever, but often hidden gems that passed me by a few years before. C'est la vie.

Cloacked figure is so indifferent he even post message so much he is indifferent. For real. He doesn't care. Why would he? Everytime you don't care about something you should state it right away. Another way people won't see how you don't care... oh wait.

"Well, shit, I think they should show exclusively text in their trailers, if they want me to be interested"

NEWSFLASH: They don't give a shit about YOU.

"It's like they're ignoring their true fanbase and potential RPers in favor of the next gen crowd."

idiot. 3 reasons here.

1. The Codex isn't much of a fanbase. 10p0 of us doesn't much even a fraction of their 'true' fanbase.

2. We mean shit to their bottom line.

3. They don't have to seel the game to us. They alreayd have 'us' at the ballz. You, and I, and most of their 'true' fans have alreayd bought this game. The point is to sell the game to those who may not be interested in it. The trailers aren't for us.

New Trailer

Pretty bad. What's with the film grain effect? Trying to evoke Silent Hillish horror? Why not focus more on the new features instead of just showing flashes at the end?

You Obsidian guys should complain to Atari.
