Use evolution points to alter and improve your virus. From what I've seen while playing..

Viruses: Gain EP fastest
Bacteria: Moderate EP gain
Parasite: Slowest EP gain

so far the best I've done was 98% of humanity gone, I just couldn't infect madagascar for some reason. Also the Vaccince hospitals create will either prevent further infections or i've had it mutate my virus into an unstoppable super-virus.

no ports or no airports, dont remember, but it has only one of these. So it means you have to infect it before they close everything. Which is pretty hard to do unless you start right beside them.

btw, my virus is the Purple Haze. Massive coughage, not very lethal, but VERY contagious and resistant.

I just want to envelop the world in a beautiful purple haze

Speed is probably the biggest factor in how many points you get, you get more for wiping out 50% quickly than you do for getting 100% slowly.

But this did make me replay and I managed to end the world by starting as a parasite in Madagascar
