As I find patches (few there are) I'll try to link them and maybe try to get this to work. If I have to I'll get an ancient win98 machine or maybe XP. Perhaps my old one only needs its bios battery replaced (here's hoping). Maybe someone can walk me through getting a win98 emu working eh? Anyways... this popped up

Ensign shit Downloads + bullshit patches (eh this site is BS as nothing works and it looks like an old scam.. doesn't dl or anything so fuck that site)

Shattered Light Review -- GAMESPOT
A good adventure can overcome shoddy graphics or a clunky interface with an imaginative plot and interesting gameplay. Shattered Light, unfortunately, has neither.

A better name for Catware's role-playing game Shattered Light would be Diablo Lite. What has been removed from Blizzard's now-classic dungeon romp? Three things: a polished interface, attractive graphics, and fun.

Shattered Light is essentially an RPG adventure builder with a sample quest included. The packaged campaign tells the story of Delos, a world "not unlike our own" until someone rather stupidly tries to "capture the primal power of the universe." The upshot of this quite frankly insane attempt to "capture the primal power of the universe" is that Delos becomes less like our world and more like Middle Earth. Some inhabitants become much more magical, while others become one of over a hundred monsters such as dragons and unicorns. As a result of all the newfound fantastical wizardry, medieval weapon stores are opened, dungeons are constructed, and many people lose things then offer rewards for their retrieval. You are cast as the hero of Delos. Your duties include wandering all over the place and finding the ten gem shards needed to access the dungeon containing the Final Boss Monster of Delos, the Laria.

As in any standard RPG, you must first create a character. Shattered Light includes eight character types covering all the basics, with spell casters, fighters, and various combinations of the two. The character creation screen is where you'll get your first sense that you may not have purchased a triple-A title. Of the eight choices, three have the exact same palette-swapped portraits. A small detail perhaps, but indicative of Shattered Light's generic, bargain-bin atmosphere.

The game itself, like Diablo, plays out in real time across maps rendered in isometric perspective. The graphics are tile based, rather washed out, and not particularly mood setting or otherwise interesting. The interface is presented as a series of desktop windows. The main playfield, inventory, spell list, etc. are all separate, often overlapping, screens. Performing a standard operation, such as removing an active inventory item and replacing it with another, often involves opening up several windows and manually dragging them into viewable position. This is a tedious drill at best, and, when attempted during a time-critical situation such as combat, effectively sucks the fun right out of Shattered Light.

A good adventure can overcome shoddy graphics or a clunky interface with an imaginative plot and interesting gameplay. Shattered Light, unfortunately, has neither. For a game that advertises quests written by such noted fantasy authors as Robert Silverberg, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, and P.N. Elrod, Shattered Light has virtually no task more elaborate than listening to an NPC describe his lost treasure, then fetching it for him. There is no sense of an evolving story composed of a complex chain of actions and reactions. The only thing leading you to believe that multiple authors may have written the plot is the inconsistent way in which NPCs address you. Some speak directly to you, while others have their actions narrated in the third person, perhaps by famous fantasy author Jody Lynn Nye - who knows?

Gamers excited by the possibility of creating their own adventures with Shattered Light's world builder will be disappointed. Although every map, monster, item, spell, and NPC can be redefined, graphics must be selected from the stock images provided with the game, and the basic goal of finding the ten gem shards cannot be altered. More importantly, no scripting language is included, severely limiting the storytelling possibilities. While the ability to tweak the stats of every game item might give the illusion of creative power, the core quest activity of item retrieval is immutable. This inability to script sophisticated event sequences outside of the standard quest structure leads inevitably to frustration for anyone hoping to create compelling scenarios.

The provided editing tools are also subpar. Editing screens contain lists of hundreds of items each with ten or more separate attributes, yet they cannot be sorted or searched through, making managing them needlessly cumbersome. In other places, previously defined items must be linked to other items by manually typing their cryptic identifier tags, rather than simply picking them from a list. These are just two of many examples of the editor's overall lack of polish - excusable when the tool is included as a bonus, but not when it is a game's central feature.

Shattered Light includes a server application that allows user-created scenarios to be experienced by up to eight people simultaneously over the Internet. The host can act as a sort of dungeon master, altering some statistics on the fly. Mutiplayer works as advertised and is stable, but the rewards of playing the game are so meager as to make this fact all but irrelevant.

In the early '90s, SSI released an RPG builder called Forgotten Realms: Unlimited Adventures. It secured a cult following and, although out of print, retains a community of quest creators to this day. To anyone who fondly remembers that game and hopes some developer will bring its robust scripting capabilities into the realm of Internet multiplayer gaming: With the release of Shattered Light, your wait continues.

Ok, I guess that one site is sort of legit but outdated. The manual is the same I believe as on the archives (10 megs so derpity derp). I managed to get this:

Shattered Light Spell Crash Bug Fix, Missing SpellDsc.txt Table File. 44K Shattered Light Spell Crash Bug Fix, Missing SpellDsc.txt Table File.

Sorry, couldn't get the 226 demo. When I get back I'll try to figure out what to do with my disc (maybe make an iso or try to).

Lol.. this site

Jesus Christ I remember this thing, mad delusions ran through my mind of the kinds of worlds I was going to create. It all came to nothing of course.

Swords of Xeen was kinda ok though.

I let ACS influence me too much on this purchase (and the art influenced my choice as well). Not a damn single video on youtube of gameplay or construction; damn.

KeighnMcDeath, would you mind making an ISO of this? I made an account just to contact you on here. The Devs seem to be dead (they're not responding nor are they responding to offers to buy the game from them). Side note...the devs apparently either worked on or ported the Might and Magic trilogy (which perplexes me since they could have gotten another Publisher to help them out instead of going solo after working with Pearson). And I only say that since Pearson's main publications are...educational textbooks. To my knowledge, at least.

Iso of the trilogy or just swords? I thought gog sold this in its entirety. I might have a makeshift iso somewhere. Finding the set will be the issue as the discs have long been stored away in a large storage room. Since i left then came back; my parents filled the storage room with all sorts of crap and moved shit around. This could take a while.

If you mean shattered lights, then I'll take a look. That was more recent and i will say it failed on win 7 and 10. I need to figure out virtual win xp or 98se. I just recently received the 3 novels and saw the ad in the center for online play. Site is long dead and the site I linked doesn't help. I would have liked to patch it and get the damn thing working.

Yes! An ISO of Shattered Light. I asked CDProjektRed if they could restore it and unfortunately, due to the constraints of Cyberpunk 2077, all teams, including their MS Dos (and beyond ) PC games are busy. It would be an awesome preservation of gaming history (since Pearson was a part of it) and I would personally appreciate it as well! :)

I'll see what I can do. I still find it fascinating it had a possible online version at one time. Two of the novels I ordered had the cards in them. Now i just have to locate the discs.

It took me all day in storage but i finally found the box, then printed manual (i believe its a pdf), and the the slipcase with the disc. Found a copy too.
DTRYMev.jpg

I'm waiting for the mail to send me the second book. Tomorrow i'll make an iso and put it up for DL. I wish the patch was a downloadable. Hope someone can find that. There is a mini manual i need to scan that comes with the disk.

Hey, thanks a million! If you hadn't ordered it already, I would have shipped you my copy (my game came with the 2nd book but I lost the game over the years. Luckily, I never lost track of the book, since it was one of my first fantasy novels in my book collection). If you need help with archiving any of it, please let me know and I would love to give you a hand (I also try and archive obscure stuff).

Amazon says RUNNING LATE. Supposedly its in the eugene facility according to the tracker. I should get the WEG D6 Thunderscape World of Aden pnp module by Saturday as well. Sad those boxes never survived but the physical manuals in them are in mint condition.

When I look at Shattered Light, I keep thinking about Spiderweb software games. This tool/game definitely needs a little bit of a platthrough video.

Ok, I sent you a message to a link I uploaded. Let me know if it works. I'm charging my portable scanner so it will take a a bit to do a few of the small manual scans. I should just dig out my flatbed as it has a simple pdf maker. I checked the size on the disk vs the iso and files and they look identical. I mounted it and it worked like the disc. Of course, when trying to run the programs (online, offline, mapmaker) they all failed stating some 16bit bs. I need a simple win98/xp emulator and not one I have to install into dosbox. Sometimes I'm pretty stupid when it comes to emulators and getting them to run. I'm pretty much the type who hopes its plug in & play vs figuring every in & out of said programs.

Cheers. I'll keep ya'll updated.

edit...
derp.. didn't use a shareable link. Fixed now I believe. I tested via my phone on firefox plus since it doesn't have me logged into google (ever).

I received the final book today. Sadly, it isn't top condition and it is missing the ad. Oh well.

It works! I just got it downloaded. Thanks again for helping Preserve this. I'm thinking of uploading it to Archive.Org and/or Abandonia. The Devs seem to be dead (and the sad thing is...I think their website is just piggybacking on another Host, hence why even though their site is dead, it hasn't been taken down).

So after some research (before coming here to ask you if you could upload the ISO) and I accidently stumbled across the source for the Townsquare's theme: It's called "The Eye of the Hawk" by noted artist/song writer Jon Mark (he's got his own Wikipedia page and everything. Here is an AMV someone made using that exact song:

https://youtu.be/zBVhMueW-bw

the song on its own:
https://youtu.be/R_KH7oJrpEs

the album it's from "The Standing Stones of Callanish) (Which is FILLED to the BRIM with Celtic-influenced music, perfect for a Fantasy game):

https://youtu.be/gWI-4bAZfyE

I'll see if there's a way to run Shattered Light in a Virtual Machine if Windows 10 rejects it. Thanks again for helping preserve this game!

Kewl beans! I'll look at the vids and probably record them. Mediahuman has been an awesome product for me. I used it a lot as trial back when i went to library to use high speed net for 2 hours a day (each computer had different ip and i had the progs on thumb drive. Computer hopping to get more recordings). Later i bought full versions and it works great as they constantly update.

cheers.

Oh, haha, no no no, I was just sharing it with you for Trivia related reasons. Jon Mark's song's been used in a couple things (including random videos on Youtube like that AMV). Thanks again. Side note, hit me up any time if you need a second or third hand in preserving old media.

I still need to scan the small booklet. Its kind of like a hotkey and quick look at options. I just been pretty busy getting ready for halloween and the other holidays + winter prep. Clearing blackberries and harvesting tumeric seems to be the next large job.

Another game I enjoyed and was mapping was Azalta. Seems impossible to get the developer version. I was using Grid Cartographer to slowly map the continent. I must say character developement seems a tad annoying. I still can't cast spells so i'm doing something wrong there.

Mobygames Shattered Light Overview

Description
A great evil has come across the land and it's up to you to destroy this horrible evil. That pretty much sums up the story of the pre-made single player game.

Shattered Light comes with a World Builder that lets you create maps, write quests, create weapons, write NPC dialogue, and much more. Then when your world is full of quests and evil monsters to slay you can take it online with eight other people and, if you are the host, modify player attributes on the fly.
I saw the add in a Dragon Magazine and when I saw the game actually in a gaming store at the mall I decided to pick it up. I was picking up odd games that looked obscure all the time and bargain bin ones as well like Sailor Moon. I also picked up good utility titles like dragon magazine archives, core rules etc. I feel shitty i passed up on a torn box copy of Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas. Ugh! How stupid of me. I did have a pal send me an iso in my early dialup days though.

The draw for me was construction and the weird style. Sadly, it was a cumbersome beast to play. Construction wasn't too terrible. I feel it could have used polish but at this point online gaming and competition just shoved this mediocre utility into a corner. Bad timing. I didn't get to experience the online aspects and haven't heard of anyone who admits to trying it.

There might be some blogs or forums somewhere right?

Funny note: Stuart Smith had a game on apple that was 8 player hotseat called Fracas (later he made Ali Baba, Heracles, and of course ACS - Adventure Construction set). The 8 player thing seemed cool. But would you play this or Doom or Duke or Diablo or Warcraft? Didn't help that Diablo 2 came iut in 2000.

Wow LAN all using applewin? I always wondered how that'd work.

Lol, any (Up to 8 which makes me wonder why ACS is only up to 4)

Yeah, i think if all the maps are the same then just determining randoms and treasure would be needed to make an ACS module of this game.

And you just know he repurposed that for map creation in ACS
