Shores Unknown is an upcoming tactical RPG from a multinational team by the name of Vallynne. The first thing you'll notice about the game is its PS1-esque low poly aesthetic. It appaars to be a kind of Western/Japanese RPG hybrid, with a turn-based combat system in which characters can move around the battlefield freely but only in response to orders selected from a menu. In Shores Unknown, you play as a mercenary captain in an autocratic kingdom who gets on the wrong side of the law and is forced to set sail northward through a mysterious fog from which no ship has ever returned. The game has been in development since 2017 and a demo has been previously available during a couple of Steam Game Festivals, most recently earlier this month. As of today the game will be available permanently as an Early Access title. Here's the Early Access trailer and accompanying press release:

17 February 2021 - Shores Unknown, a tactical RPG from developers Vallynne and publisher Hitcents, has launched into Early Access today for Windows PC with this brand new trailer.

Batten down the hatches for an adventure through a vibrant, medieval land as you explore beyond the Murk - an all-consuming wall of fog that slows closes in on all who take to sea. In Shores Unknown, you'll take the role of a freshly promoted mercenary captain in the midst of a land dominated by the tight-fisted Crown and their stalwart Inquisition.

When swords are drawn, it's up to you to co-ordinate and customise your crew, and take charge in Shores Unknown's fluid, gridless tactical combat.

When asked the inspiration behind Shores Unknown, Lead Developer Ilya Rudnev said, "We’re fans of RPGs - both Western and Japanese classics - and with our game, we wanted to express and share our love for the genre by creating an original blend of narrative, exploration and combat, inspired and affected by our varied cultural backgrounds."

He continues, "Our goal is to create battle experiences which are thoughtful and tactical, but also feel dynamic and fast-paced. Your decisions as a player matter, but the characters aren’t mere pawns and will use their AI to position themselves, manoeuvre around the enemies and react to the ever-changing battlefield situation accordingly when acting out your orders."

"Player feedback has been incorporated from the start, always been vital for our decision-making. Now, we’re taking it a step further with Early Access, to help shape Shores Unknown into the best experience it can be."

Shores Unknown is available now in Early Access for Windows PC via Steam.

Features of Shores Unknown
  • Gridless tactical turn-based combat - take your time to assess the situation and command your characters in the Order Phase, then watch your strategy come to life during the Action Phase as the characters maneuver around the battlefield and carry out their orders.
  • Adaptive character advancement system - characters learn new skills and unlock new classes depending on their equipment and combat choices.
  • Deep party customization options - allow the player to build the perfect mercenary team of their choice, allowing full control over equipment and skills used by each character.
  • Vibrant world - rendered in low-poly stylistic full of little details to immerse yourself in. Explore the various locations of the game, interact with dozens of characters and uncover the secrets of the Shores.

The Shores Unknown Early Access build is available on Steam and GOG for $20. According to the FAQ, the game will remain in Early Access for about a year, after which the price will be increased.
