Space Rangers 2 DRM Free... But Mine Isn't.

Hi all, brand spanking new to the forum and hoping for advice from clever folk..like wot I ain't.

Once upon a time I bought "Space Rangers 2" for a song and took it home in high hopes of space adventury goodness.

For reasons now lost to my befuddled brain, I deleted it not long after I started. I "think" I was probably short of hard drive space and lured away by another shiny thing.. but I might be remembering that wrong.

Regardless, I came across it in my games trunk the other day and I fancy giving it another go, but (and here's where the advice hopefully comes in) I have a bit of a problem with it.

When I first tried this, I did so on another PC. Back in those days I was youthful and innocent and completely ignorant of DRMs. Much nastiness swam around my PC's innards and I was oblivious to it all. Ahhhh, simpler times. These days, victim of "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing" syndrome, I am only semi ignorant of DRMs, but I know enough to want to keep them away from the rig I now use.

So "Space Rangers 2" is now DRM free if you buy it today. Huzzah! But my copy isn't is it. Mine is a creaky old copy from days of yore (hmmmm..yore!) and if I install it I'll be inviting that nasty old "Starforce" fellow in for tea and bickies.

I fancy another go at the game, but I'm not so keen that I'm about to buy it again. So (and apologies if this is a stupid question, but I just don't do tech.) is it possible to run my copy without the DRM getting in, now that they're not bothered about it anyway?

Many thanks for any advice

All the best

Kinda have to go with the "Torrent it!" crowd here.

Either that, or wait for a sale on some digital download website and buy it for a dollar.

Depending on how you feel about Steam, you might/might not take advantage over a sale that should be coming up in about a month or so that will likely have Space Rangers pack on sale with a hefty discount. Gamersgate and the likes also often have promotion sales.

But yeah, really, you bought the original legally, I would say it enables you to freely digitally download a free copy off from the friendly DRM-removing folk. SR2 wasn't exactly cheap in a boxed version.

I'm not aware of any possibility of installing the game but not the copy-protection. Though it seems as if win7 didn't install/deactivated TAGES when I installed The Witcher last week. But that seems to be more an incompatability issue than MS suddenly being consumer-friendly.

So, yes, buying (from GoG) or torrenting seem to be the only options.
It's a fun game, too.

PS: Well, the codex is not for the faint of heart. We have lots of disgusting memes going on and in the past you would have been welcomed with lots of links claiming to lead to a solution to your problem and instead leading to shock-porn. But most assholes have been substituted with morons, so we don't do that anymore... :( The board isn't moderated either (apart from spam). If you can look past that kind of stuff, you might get something out of the codex. But we have the best emoticons:

A shining endorsement of the forum Shannow. I've bumped into more than my fair share of Assholes on the net, so I say bring on the morons!

Thanks Angthoron, that was a concern if I'm honest about it. I don't no much about "torrenting" things as I've never done it. But I'm thinking that it's "yar matey, mind me parot" stuff right? If so, then I'd be inclined to agree with you in theory and say, "well I bought it legitimately, why shouldn't I be punished for that now?" Still it's dodgy ground for a simple forest dweller like me.

Sounds like you probably don't have the expansion - the GOG version comes with it, and it's a worthwhile purchase in its own right, so I'd consider that one.
Thanks Admiral. Despite myself I've got myself in the mood to play again to the extent that I followed your advice and headed over to "GoG".

Annnnd I was just about to buy it for £7, when just on the offchance I looked at Amazon and they have the reboot, which is all the extra content and still no drm, all for £4.99. :D So I've bought it there and am now really looking forward to sinking my teeth into it.

Once again thanks all for the replies.

Good choice, Reboot is the expansion'd SR2 that folk here have recommended. For £5 it's practically a steal.

Is it called Reboot? Oh well. I knew it was Re-something. Have fun!

Yeah, it is.

To the OP, what it adds is a bunch of new text missions, some planetary RTS fights (I didn't like them so well, good thing you can skip them altogether) and a new class of items, which are "rare" or something, basically, ship parts that can be one or several steps better than the regular or improved equipment. Some consider them to be a bit of a cheat, but I personally think they're a nice additional incentive to space-faring, you get to hunt down those ship parts and hope some bastard didn't grab them before you got there.

Torrent Space Rangers 2: Reloaded. This is the special, super awesome edition with extra content.

I heard that the expansion was kinda broken because the AI did not use the new stuff.

There would be all this nice new content, but the AI just used old crap.

I might be wrong..

Why the hell would you respond to a request for a DRM free version of Space Rangers 2 by suggesting the Steam version?

Yeah, that's why I said that it depends on his stance on Steam, whether it's the "It's a DRM!" camp (like myself) or "It's awesome! Cheap games!" camp like some others. I like to pretend I'm fair, sometimes.

Even professional game journalists have gone on record torrenting a game they legally purchased due to bad DRM.

That being said, there's a certain degree of comfort and convenience in a GOG download. I like having a support page where you can discuss a problem without people instantly assuming you can't get it to run due to a poorly cracked torrent version. With GOG, everyone's using the same version, so if there's a problem, it's either due to your hardware/software setup, or it's a problem for everyone (Build Engine games, etc.).

Yeah. Steam won't break your optical drive, but it might make you wait through twenty minutes of TF2 updates before you can play. That's somehow more obnoxious. ;)
