Hey all-
This sort of dovetails with the TES negativism topic, but whatever. I just stopped over at The Imperial Library, and there's a big post from TES loremaster (sorry) Sinder Velvin.

I'd like to officially announce my departure from TIL and the The Elder Scrolls Community. This is my last day here as a Librarian.

I assume some of you want to know why I'm leaving. Well, there are two main reasons.

First of all, Oblivion has disappointed me greatly. I really don't like the game. I think it's too darn mainstream. It doesn't even feel like an RPG to me. More like a hack and slash game for the action gamers. Sure, there's a lot of eye candy in the game, but I think the gameplay is really bad.

I admit I didn't have high hopes for the game - anyone who has read my recent to semi-recent posts on the Official Forums knows that. But I did have high hopes for the ingame books. I have to say that I'm disappointed in that department as well: half of the books, if not more, were in former TES games (In Morrowind, mostly.). Also, I believe the new books are not nearly on par with the old ones.

So yes, I think Oblivion sucks. So bad that I've decided to leave. I know most people think it's a masterpiece. But folks, I don't want to argue with you. Please, respect my opinion and I'll respect yours.

Second of all, I'm getting married with my pregnant girlfriend. The point is that, once I become a father, I won't have a lot of free time anymore. Certainly not enough to keep working on this site, Oblivion's disappointement aside. [...]

Hope y'all find this interesting. I haven't played OB yet, (I'm broker than Todd Bridges at the moment) but I'm really surprised how many serious TES fans have been turned off by the game. Juicing up my system for OB was a big priority for me. Now I'm just going to wait until my friend gets it for his 360.

It's always a bad sign (and a shame) when dedicated fans leave gaming communities because the latest offerings' gameplay/features are so bad that even the hardcore fans can't overlook them.

Well, it's a shame. The dungeons are awesome. The rest is crap.

I'm no TES fanboy, but i signed up to the ESF at the beginning of last year expecting a good game, and a leap forward in the series. I still remember the initial flow of optimism and excitement, which slowly turned to apprehension and then disappointment as the retards started rolling in, and "features" of the game started being revealed. Now my feelings are more of disgust. Even up till release of the game i was still intending to obtain it, but now, given all the shitty reviews ive seen here, im not even going to do that.

Enough of this Oblivion bullshit...bring on Gothic 3!

Who the fuck needs old clods like Sinder Velvin when Bethsoft has a new host of rich kids to train trail after?

Can you clarify the bit about the dungeons a bit? I mean sure they're atmospheric and pretty fun to clear, but they're basically all just linear slopes aren't they? I didn't expect the huge random generated mazes from Daggerfall (or the much better handcrafted ones) but those dungeons could be from any modern day FPS. At level 22 I don't feel I'm getting any worthwile loot either, just picked the lock of a hard difficulty chest at the end of a dungeon to find 55 gold. Yay. At least I can sell the daedric bows and daggers; if only there was any use for gold in this game.

Yep. Remember all the Bethesda fans that ditched them after Morrowind? All their replacements who loved Morrowind are now ditching them after Oblivion. I'm sure the Oblivion fans will ditch them after the next game...

The average IQ of TES fans seems to be following an exponential decay curve. At this rate, by TES VI, only a handful of grunting orangutans will be playing the game and posting their 10/10 reviews on the ESF.

Don't insult the poor orang-utans like that. It's bad enough that their homes get laid to waste, now they get called TES fanboys?

Anyone who would consider themselves an Elders Scrolls "fan" after Morrowind clearly lacks any sense of taste anyway...so the fact some of them might have a problem with Oblivion means absolutely nothing to me. If anything, I would take that as a huge endorsement. Morrowind failed horribly as an RPG, so they went more of an action route with Oblivion, which ended up being one of the things that makes it a pretty good action/exploration game, rather than just a shitty, generic RPG like it could've been.

At level 22 I don't feel I'm getting any worthwile loot either, just picked the lock of a hard difficulty chest at the end of a dungeon to find 55 gold. Yay. At least I can sell the daedric bows and daggers; if only there was any use for gold in this game.

As you may have noticed, lockpicking is basically pointless in Oblivion, as it's ridiculously easy. When you see a locked chest, assume it's just a normal chest to practice security skill on(if it's a primary skill). I'd be a little sickened if I was getting uber loot from my crummy 18 secuirty skill, since I can pick any lock in the game regardless.

I don't think that was the main reason, read his post to the end.
and he already didn't like the game before his release.

To be fair to the guy, he's not the one trumpeting the news of his decision. He simply announced his departure and posted his reasons, where it matters - the TES site he helped build and maintain for years.

There are plenty of responses there indicating a number of people do give a fuck, including Ted Peterson, founding father of the series.

No doubt there'd be no-one giving a fuck if you left HellgateWanker or whatever it is, but you'd be entitled to do the same at the very least I'd expect.

Well, that goes without saying, but nobody expects a Fallout game from Bethesda, while expecting a TES RPG was somewhat reasonable.

Pretty much what you said. They are atmospheric and pretty fun to clear ... and pointless because the loot system/distribution is fucked. However, considering how crappy the rest is they do feel awesome in comparison (disclaimer: but they really aren't).

This is funny, when you were staff here I can recall more than a few occasions when you needed the waambulance (not to mention your flippity floppety Troika thing, and then there was Cleave Blakemore thing, and then... well by now get the point, right?). At least he's only made a SINGLE statement and is not going insane like some people who used to be staff here.

The mistake was entirely yours. Don't surf the Codex while you're drinking.

Where have you guys been? I'm a Fallout fan and I was isolated long before Bethesda got the property. Fallout Tactics, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel for the PS2?

The property was already run into the crapper before Bethesda got ahold of it, and based on the last two games I am optimistic, especially after suffering through that PS2 POS.
