It's supposed to have been out for almost 2 weeks, but I've heard very little about it. Anyone tried it and want to give some feedback? I only played the first one, Aftermath I believe, but wasn't very impressed. I did hear the the second one was better, so I'm hoping Afterlight is worth buying. So, anyone?

If you're in the U.S., you can get it for $30.

It is much improved over Aftermath. It's more polished and both the tactical and strategic games are fun. There are lots of small changes in gameplay as well - I'm not sure all are improvements over aftershock, but it is great to see them trying different things.

Just received my copy yesterday from GoGamer. I don't have a very deep experience with it yet, and would be hesitant to recommend purchasing it. I can recommend strongly that you try the demo, as it will give you a good overview into the strategic and tactical levels of the game.

The few hours I've played it I throughly enjoyed and I haven't experienced any crashes. A bit easy, but that is to be expected starting out, it is supposed to become much harder later on. It would be misleading to make a comment on anything else, at this early point.

You might want to look at the Altar Afterlight forum and the Strategy Core Afterlight forum.

I played it for some hours and I enjoyed it. It has an interesting comic style, and most of Aftermath's problems were solved. The design of the interface sometimes a bit stupid, but I haven't encountered any bugs or crashes. I would advise to try the demo.

The RTwP is a huge step back.
The setting doesn't make much sense - also defending your own planet from evil aliens is somehow more imersing. The whole strategic layer was a bit too heavy on tedium and repetetive chores for me.

The Cocksucker tag makes his dating site even more intriguing. Implies a certain amount of success. Now if someone would only tell us about cheap viagra online.

To really enjoy Afterlight, you have to be sure to have plenty of snickers bars around.

I liked Aftermath okay, but didn;'t really give it a fair shake. I loved Aftershock though. What problems do you mean when you said it improved the problems of Aftershock? Whats improved and what did the Rt W/P comment being a big step back mean, they are all rt w/p. But, going off aftershock, its the best rt w/p system made so far that I have played. And what else is great about thse games (minus this one that I haven't played) is that on the hardest difficulty, the games are actually really difficult. Like JA2 wildfire.

erm. Do you know, that Aftershock is the 4th part of the series (interceptor not counted)?
Like JA2 wildfire.
There are 6 versions of JA Wildfire, and all of them are mods of JA2.
None of them is a new game. The latest, WF6, has a number of flaws, bugs, misplaced or only half implemented features and reduced quest content. The only difficulties it has are more enemies, higher loyalty levels and buggy faction dependencies.

No I didn't know that it was the fourth part (interceptor not counted).

What part is UFO: Exraterrestrial? 6 or 9?

I know wildfire was a mod of JA2. I bought it in a box whe SF publlished it. Thanks for the heads up though, now I'll start hating it.

I agree with roqua, the Altar UFOs are decent games, and Afterlight is probably the best one yet.

That said, there's much to improve. The maps get awfully repetitive after a while and some of the map designs are just idiotic. Firstly, why the hell does my away team start their assault from the bottom of a steep hill on some maps? They arrive by a goddamn aerial transport. Even more stupid is that you start OUTSIDE your own base when defending it. What the heck?

The combat engine is among the best I've seen in the RTWP department. Using a combination of slo-mo and pause you could probably make very intricate tactical combinations and maneuvers, the problem is you don't really have to. Through most of the game (On hard difficulty, and I'm pretty sure the actual AI don't get any better at Very Hard) the only "tactic" I had to use was concentrating my firepower. Stupid AI is not unique to this game, but one should expect more from a tactical squad game anno 2007 than a game 10 years older, RT or not nonwithstanding. This is probably my main complaint.

Another flaw lies in the weapon balance and some of the more stupid character development design decisions. If you choose in a certain way in a certain situation your squad gets a killer weapon doing 999 damage or something like that, while at the same time being extremely long ranged and accurate. This in itself is pretty stupid, there are few things I hate more than EXTREME über weapons. To add to this, one of your main sources of experience is damage done in combat, which means that this weapon is even more fucked from a balance perspective. Sure, it has only 10 shots per engagement, but still. Another dissappointment is when you research sniper rifles. Despite having their own specializations that take a few valuable days from one of your grunts to learn, they are generally fucking weak compared to most weapons.

Personell management is pretty well done on the other hand. Since you have a very limited pool of people, there are a lot of hard decisions to make. There are Techs, Scientists and Soldiers. There are also characters combining any of the two professions. Techs are used for production, base construction and out of base construction. Scientists are used for research and land surveying. People being both soldiers and one of the other professions can also play a role in some combat missions. To add to this there are a lot of further specialisations in each of professions, these take valuable time to learn. All in all, it's one of the ups in the game.

If Altar continues to improve on the series (AI is the first and foremost concern) I think they could make a truely great game some day. As it stands it's worth playing, but you might tire of the repetetiveness before you complete it.

I played a day or 2 after the new aliens made it 2 earth in aftershock. I was hoping the difficulty kicked up more than it did, but it didn't and got too repetitive. So I agree, the repetetive aspect is a downfall. X-com was repetetive, but you got in 1/100th of the battles so it wasn't as bad.

And my strongest characters were the melee guys with swords. They would fly around chopping everyone up, my second most powerful were my duel-wielders, unloading autofire into a close target, my snipers were good for the battles where you had a million guys coming out of a building as they could gte a couple threw the window. But my grenadiers were better at the doorway. But again, I played only a couple days past the invasion (not games days, real days).
