Ultima VII using Exult

I love that you can change some of the gameplay settings and screen resolution using Exult to play Ultima VII.

Im curious though as on the Exult page it says the game was meant to be played using original resolution of 320x200 and that upping the resolution is considered cheating as it shows more of the screen then it normally would.

It looks so much better with 400x300. Anyone played it with that and does it ruin the game or is it worth it?

Whats the point of Ultima VII without npc schedules.

Exult has npc schedules. Not sure if it's a 100% accurate imitation original, but I haven't noticed any odd behavior last time I played it.

You need the svn as exult hasn't been updated in some eons.
And if they included the unofficial patches (from that Marzo guy) it wouldn't be amiss either, but noooooooo. So noone knows about it.

Is there some way to get a better framerate? I don't mind how dated graphics are but choppy visuals really irk me.

I think if you have higher resolutions it may mess up situations in which you were supposed to see only after it would appear on screen.

In Hi-res, you can see more and maybe trigger some situations before you should. Though i never tested, I believe you could just change the resoilution prior to these situations.

Doesn't hi res allow you to avoid battles since you can see the enemy before they initiate combat?

Make sure you are playing the latest build, NOT the 1.2 version.

Hmm, the only newer version listed says this

Exult 1.4.x Snapshots (Unstable) - use at your own risk!

I dont want to play with an unstable version. Seems like they are still working on updating it monthly.

Also, someone mentioned that some of the Ultima VII patches may not be included with Exult? Should I apply the patches myself or make sure I have the most recent release?

Havent ever played all the way through Ultima VII or VI and just want to get the best working version to play.

As far as I know, the Exult snapshots should be pretty stable. They just have to say "use at your own risk" so that they don't get spammed in case something isn't working. It's just a way of saying "we don't officially support this yet".

I doubt Exult includes any patches, since it's not a game, it's just an engine designed to implement any existing data files. I'm pretty sure if you install Forge of Virtue (as you damn well should), then you don't need to worry about other patches.

Ok thanks. I think I will give snapshot 1.4 a try.

Now just need to figure out if I have Forge of Virtue installed....I downloaded Ultima VII so long ago I dont recall if it had that add on or not.

Not sure why I never finished this one, such a cool interactive world. My biggest gripe is small lame dungeons and horrible combat. Exult makes this a bit better with at least being able to pause.

You could always pause. Not sure what you're smoking.
Exult introduces an optional in-combat pause with the Spacebar ala the Infinity Engine games. This wasn't part of vanilla Ultima VII.

This. And if by some odd chance a bug pops up, post it in the forums and it will usually get fixed ASAP. They are very very good at that. I have successfully finished both VII and Part 2 using only the snapshots.

The engine itself actually fixes some bugs that were present, such as the YOU MUST WALK to Vesper bug (I think it was Vesper, heh I forget).

Also in case you didn't know, one of the guys who adds to the snapshots constantly, has some excellent mods here: http://www.seventowers.org/downloads.php?section=0

Oh. I guess I was just thinking of bringing up the inventory window as equivalent to pausing.

Yup, Ultima VII's combat is pretty horrible no matter which way you slice it.

Sorry for attempted hijacking Saxon. But this pretty much the last classic I haven't played yet.

Damn, now with Eschalon book II released Im going to have to decide whether I want to play U VII or Eschalon Book II.

U7 with Exult 1.4 is great though, love the new options.
