Have not seen Sheppard yet, but there's a lot of easter eggs from the get go.

A mysterious deadly plague has infected the city of Sun Stone, and all communications with the city administration have been cut off.

You are the appointed commander who must assemble a strike team and deploy them within the epicenter to find answers before the plague spreads beyond the city limits.

You will get to make strategic decisions that will impact the status, supplies, and sanity of your squad, and tactical decisions that will impact the survival chances of your strike team during combat engagement with the creatures.

The lives of your men are in your hands and the story will be shaped according to your choices.

The game is rather short but emphasizes the replayability factor making each playthrough as unique and fresh as possible by giving you different new games

bonus options, a bit of randomly generated content, achievements with rewards on the next game, multiple strategic choices with various outcomes, multiple paths, multiple endings and multiple ways to play.

Fair Warning: the game can become very hard if you get too greedy.

The game contains 5 chapters represented by the 5 stages of DEFCON:

DEFCON 5 - the initial stage of the outbreak, the first contact of the strike team with the quarantine city.

DEFCON 4 - things spice up, new types of infected appear, maps become bigger, and event pools refresh.

DEFCON 3 - here there will be all Bosses encounters. Think outside the box.

DEFCON 2 - all you learned so far and more, maps become bigger, all stakes are amplified, and difficulty is increased.

DEFCON 1 - all choices you made so far in the game since the beginning will now have a direct impact on the gameplay and on the ending cutscene.

Each difficulty setting has its unique layout in how many days each DEFCON has.

The game has a Lovecraftian - Military theme, mixing Real-time strategy gameplay with heavy Horror elements.

Good luck Commander!
I'm not a big fan of either rogue-likes or pixel-graphics, but the premise and the gameplay might be decent if you're starving for brains zombies.
Demo is available.
