To me, a fun RPG is a guy riding around on horseback and killing things.

A well-written story with deep character interaction and lots of C&C, combined with a well-planned well-working rule system that gives you ways to customise your character's skills for different gameplay styles. And a sense of progression. I do not want to be able to complete the "main quest" right away.

Fucking hell, what kind of question is this?

Obviously there are a boatload of different elements, but its going to be different strokes for different folks. Sometimes an RPG doesn't even have to be very good to be fun.

I found a game called Cow Wars enormous fun, but it mostly involved pressing a single button to hurl a cow at your opponent. It had dodgy collision detection and wasn't an RPG but I'm not going to let that stop my pointless, ill-considered rant.

Final Answer: Nothing, Everything and It depends. (Your alignment has shifted 3 points towards Neutral)

"Who says they have to be 'fun'?

Some of the best RPG experiences I've had are when I'm frustrated, pissed off and ready to uninstall the piece of crap but I keep going and make it through.

Trouble with putting 'FUN' and 'RPG' together is that most modern developers think this means we want a 'DUMB' game.
They want 'FUN'??? Well lets give them more minigames!!! less character depth!! more bouncey physics!! less dialogue!!

Whenever an RPG developer thesedays says thier new game is going to be 'FUN' and 'COOL' (thats another favourite of theirs) you know its probably gonna turn out to be 'DUMB SHIT'"

You are an idiot.

If a game isn't fun, it's not worth playing. Period.

However, to me, a challenging game is a fun game.

A wussy game (*cough* SOZ *cough*) is not a fun game.

Anyways, lots of things can make a game fun. Story, characters, combat, exploration, role-playing, etc., etc.

As long as the game makes me *want* to play it then it is fun. Period.

What make it fun?? when the mechanics no affect in a negative way the gameplay (i hate d&d mechanics on crpg).

When you found interest npc on the crpg, that you can even admire (dakkon on ps:t or boo the giant hamster from the space).

When main quest make you go forward, like reading a awesome book, that in all moments it make you go forward even is too late and you have to school next day, you know like reading the hexer or X novel you like. (irenicus make me go forward on Baldurs gate 2, specially after the asilum scene where yashiko, dont remember his name, die).

When side quest affect the main quest in some way, i mean dont make a distintion that all crpg do with the modern rpgs, i mean everything on games is always MAIN and SIDE, there is no relation betwen then, even in a little scale and it sux

When you do something on game and it affect in some way the world, and you can see the consecuences of your decisions.

When in my case, got mature stuff, i not mean porn, i mean real issues of life like choose betwhen help someone that really show humility and ask you for help him to get X, not the usually i give you money and go to the dungeon X kill the rat F and come to me for the money, if you do a check stat then you can get more money...

Lot more stuff i no remember.

And for god sake, the stupid thing about save the world is the worst thing you can put on a rpg, is nice if the quest mean to just save yourself or a friend from childhood, or a familiar. BUT THE WORLD NO, it dont deserve my time.

No.

You want save the world?, first i want see the world do something good for me before i want save it, or just in the game make me see how important are X or Y guy or familiar so i am forced to do it for then, but not like all games that you are forced to do it because is the only option and the writers dont find another great idea.

Yes my english sux, what do you expect from me if i learn it from crpgs.

At the Codex, good threads never die, they just wait patiently to be dug up again and have new life breathed into them.

well what do you think ?
Specifically, good combat and a meaningful ending. Meaningful ending in that if my choices lead to the bad guy taking over the world, I wanna see the bad guy taking over the world, not some half-assed cut-scene that doesn't do the job. Show me the destruction. And good combat mainly because every RPG has combat so it may as well be fun to play.

Non lethal combat.

system of surrendering with short term subquests arising from it.

carefully created areas that enable use of tactics, even require it.

leonard boyarski
sir :)

completely but believably destructible environment.

and a turn based combat system thats better then the TOEE as much as TOEE is better then some earliest example of Tb combat.:)

done in that last engine/tech demo Troika made.

i can go on you know...?

More things to do and more ways of doing them. Like instead of going inside a house to kill somebody, set fire to the house. Or instead of going on a long, drawn out quest to gain a fat reward, beef up your thieving skills and steal the fat reward. Grab a cure disease potion or beef up your constitution, kill a goblin who has the plague and sneak his corpse into an enemy camp. Let players use their imaginations to get things done.
