I think I've only played Maximum Carnage and Separation Anxiety. Both were really good with Maximum Carnage being the better of the two. Other than that, I don't think I've played another Spider Man game. I think I might've played the PS1 version for a few seconds at a friend's house. But yeah, I'd say you can't go wrong with Maximum Carnage.

The PS4/PS5 Spiderman game from Insomniac that came out a few years ago is the best of the more modern games, even if some of the things they changed character wise is a bit strange.
Yeah, I've heard that one might be the GoAT super hero game. I've never played it, and I don't plan on it, though.

The one from 2000 is the funniest. That last one was miserable story-wise.

The PS1 Spider-Mans were a bit good, though fairly linear 3D brawlers with some platforming thrown in. The first one got ported to PC, not sure how compatible it is these days though. I think of the more modern ones, Spider-Man 2 (the movie tie-in) and Spider-Man: Web of Shadows are the best, but admittedly I haven't touched the Insomniac one. Bear in mind you want one of the console ports of the movie tie-in, since the PC version of it is actually a completely different, objectively worse game.

Maximum Carnage was great, hard as fuck though unless you use cheats. Demogoblin is a little cheap bitch.

PS1 Spider-Man was the best for a good few years due to how it actually felt like a series of comic-books in one game and has a big villain roster. You pretty much fight all the big deal '90s Spider-Man villains, has a bunch of unlockable suits with different abilities.

Spider-Man 2 movie tie-in was the last one I played and was easily the best of all them. Maybe it has been outdone by now but back then nothing else compared to feeling like good ol Petey. Was fun to just swing around the city and stop random crimes. Only problem was that it had fairly lame villains that were mostly anti-climatic fights.

Easily the best of the bunch, as the alternative universe spidey (GGS) already said, it captures the feel of the comic books very well. Maybe too well, since it had some of the same... undertones.

It actually hasn't been. The newest game is just like the recent Assassin's Creed games, you just push the stick and press a button and it's all automated for you. You have to think less when it comes to web swinging than in even that first PS1 game.

I found the formulaic structure so uninteresting. One of several PS4 games I never finished. What a crappy console. Actually, maybe I just can't like Spider-Man.

The only one I ever played. It was hard af, but having few games to play as a kid made me persistent.

False. There are over 60 of them. Spider-Man is the most represented comic book character in video games.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Man, this thread reminded me of the first Spider-Man game I ever played, the one on the Atari 2600. I don't think I ever figured out what to do.

For actually relevant info, I remember liking the ones on the PlayStation.

You can run ps1 emulators to a reasonably accurate degree on toasters (i.e. RaspberryPi-level devices) these days. I'm sure your PC would handle them just fine.

as a spider-fag i'll list my top five:
5. shattered dimensions - neat beat em up that makes good use of the property
4. miles morales - gameplay wise better than the 2018 game but no raimi suit
3. spider-man 2 - really great web swinging, kinda jank combat but a fun little experience still
2. spider-man 2018 - good all around package but too streamlined in my opinion
1. ultimate spider-man - great web swimming, good combat, good open world level design, great presentation and you get to play as venom too
i havent played web of shadows yet

Spider-man for PSX from 2000 is great if you want some nostalgia. The game features great secrets store full of unlocks like a suit with infinite web cartridges and full-on invincibility. In the game you can meet people like Flaming Torch, Dare-Devil, Captain America or Lizard. The story itself has great pacing until later where unnecessary padding is added. If you can't stomach the graphics at least watch it on YouTube. The story and jokes are true to Marvel's, hey even Stan Lee has few lines in the game.

Spider-man from 2004(?) as a movie tie-in is also great. Did you know you can play as Green Goblin who gets his own VO and has certain cutscenes and dialogs changed? It's like entirely new game. There are also other extras like hidden special moves or secret boss-fight in cage-fighting challenge. It is a next-gen version of the original game I mentioned above. Even the special moves stayed the same. Also has Tobey as VO for Spidey.

Spider-man 3 for PS3 is also neat. I didn't play second game so that's my nostalgia title. Great web-swinging mechanics, ability to finally walk on the street, the graphics and unique mechanics for black suit (no fall damage, rage mode which can be generated outside combat unlike using normal suit). Beenox dropped the ball when they didn't include to play the entire game as New Goblin even when there is a short time-frame when you get to play him. No unlocks, repetitive crime-fighting grinding but at least the web-swinging challenges and exploration makes up for it.

Spider-man for PS4 is the most detailed but also the most Ubi-fied. Tons of copy-pasted challenges and tokens to collect, like Oscorp gas-dispensers, NYPD jammers, Spidey's backpacks to collect, crime-events and more plus you feel more like gadgeteer than a spider with all the crazy abilities. Honestly they should've gone with upgrading web-swinging and combat moves and leave the Iron-Man stuff for later. Has tons of suits though including Sam Raimi's which was brought back from fans requests.

Spider-man Web of Shadows is also great from what I have heard. It features choices and consequences. Yup, a Spidey RPG where you get to decide how the story develops and ends. Features same web-swinging mechanics from Spider-man 2/3, has open world and cool bossfights (you get to tag-team with Wolverine!).
