IV was a pretty solid space shooter with high-budget cut-scenes and some C&C. Definitely not a popamole.

Anyway, I wonder if it's possible to run it on my comp...

The combat wasn't up there with x wing and tie fighter.

But it was no worse than in the previous wing commander titles. So in summation not a :decline: and your argument fails.

C&C was there as far back as 1. Don't remember if 4 followed the same pattern, but 1,2 and 3 (as well as the 4 addons to 1 & 2) had a really cool branching structure, where winning or failing missions would set you on the "good ending" or the "not as good ending" branch (as well as an eventual "you lose" ending), and you could jump back and forth between the branches (as well as intermediate sub-branches) depending on which missions are successful and which are not. Really cool way to do things.

WC was always more of an action game with simulation trappings than a real space flight simulator. X-Wing and TIE Fighter were much closer to the simulation end.

#3 has a bit of a branching path if you fail certain missions. #4 has choices where you can choose when to defect as well as Circe versus Speradon for different types of missions. There are some choices for Wing Commander Prophecy. To get a really good idea of the missions, choices, and gameplay check out my Wing Commander 1-5 videos at:

WC 3 was boring and repetitive. It was 94's Mass Effect 2. Out the same year, Star Crusader had far more C&Cs and richer gameplay than WC III, wich had just some gaudy full-motion-videos, a handful of C&C's and was hyped by the press just as today's popamole blockbusters are.
