Arma: Cold War Assault 1.99 is an update to the original Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis* as developed by us 10 long years ago.
This game was originally sold and known as Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, Operation Flashpoint: Resistance or Operation Flashpoint: Game of the Year Edition*. Users of Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis and Operation Flashpoint: GOTY are allowed to freely update to Arma: Cold War Assault as long as they agree with the end user license as in the manual and shown during the setup.

Pretty cool I guess.

CWR2 team also released a CWR2 demo for ArmA2 which includes remade Kolgujev and Everon, ~9 first CWC campaign missions, 10 SP missions and 12 multiplayer missions all ported from OFP

http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=14568

I've completed 6 SP missions and 3 campaign ones and they are quite authentic, except also better due to a superior ArmA2 gameplay and AI

It isn't an overhaul patch.

It's a patch that mainly optimizes stability and multiplayer code and expands editor functionality somewhat. Basically whatever problems/wishes that were reported since 1.96

They had to rename the game for obvious reasons (like Codemasters owning the trademark, but everything else belongs to BIS).

EDIT: that's actually the whole OFP game in that archive.

If you want an "overhaul" of OFP - CWR2 is your best bet.

So 10 years turned out to be p. goodl so far

- a new update for ArmA Cold War Assault (formerly OFP) together with a full game for free (at least for original OFP owners)

- ArmA2 Free, a "demo" (low-res textures on units, no mod support) of AA2 with a fully functional editor and multiplayer together with a new AA2 patch

- Take On Helicopters physics and chopper preview (and apparently the ability to make chopper mods using the new physics model) for AA2 OA which also lets you burn the shit out of your videocard with 20 km of object draw distance.

- BIS-supported CWR2 demo with 18 original OFP missions and two remade islands

Compared to big publishers crap where they drop support for their games 1 year after release and don't give a shit about the community this is :incline:

It's funny that BIS is so creatively bankrupt that the only way they can create entertaining content is when they make exact copies of decade old shit.

???

They have specialised in making FPS milsims as realistic as possible. What else can they do with Arma now besides updating the engine and to design more area and missions? A decent campaign would be welcome, and it is always possible to improve AI and squad tactics, but what can be done besides these? Make something in different era like World War 2, go futuristic with a bit of speculative fiction or what? I am curious.

Now that you've mentioned it there is WW2 game (Iron Front) based on AA2 engine coming out next year and AA3 is futuristic with a bit of speculative fiction (muslim nations got their shit together and invade Europe).

Also AA3 will have PhysX simulation for all vehicles in the game and people now gush and whine for BIS to add helicopter physics from Take On which is really great.

I've tested Take On's PhysX chopper demo for AA2 OA and you get turbulence, trimming, rotor overtaking, inertia - sweet shit, unplayable without 3 axis joystick obviously but even civilian chopper feels great to fly.

They could try and make a military sim that's actually, you know, fun to play.

I never played OFP.

But I played a lot of SWAT 3... I assume it's the same style but on bigger maps?

It's fun to play if your definition of fun is everything else but "gotta frag me sum noobz in BF2"

Not exactly. SWAT is about cops so you arrest dudes - OFP/AA is about soldiers (so it's either shoot to kill or avoid) and is more of a "cater to your own playstyle" sandbox.

You can play it like a massive combined ops meatgrinder where you are just one cog in the machine or as a leader of a stealthy blackops team crawling through bushes and forests, avoiding superior enemy forces to blow up that Shilka in the woods. Or you can play it as Battlezone-style FPRTS, building bases, getting resources, building armies. Or as a wargame, controlling several squads and armor fists attacking the enemy outpost while you observe from a safety of your mobile HQ.

OFP CWC campaign takes you across many things you can do in the game and is a good entry point which will let you decide whether you like it or hate it, if OFP's trademark clunkiness won't stop you - remember that series came a long way since then.

Series also have a shitton of mods (including new islands) and user missions coming out all the time.

Come on, BRO ain't that thin skinned.

These games are great. I would think you guys/gals that like the real deal rpgs might appreciate these kinds of shooters, as opposed to all the other kiddy stuff out there.

The only reason these people criticize hate this game so much is that they hate Skyway and he loves it. That's about it.

Sounds like a blend of SWAT squad commands with Delta Force missions. I'll take a look.
