I'd like to make a special mention for Dracula X - Rondo Of Blood for the PC-Engine. This is *not* the same as Castlevania X that was published in SNES. Castlevania X was supposed to be a port from the PC-E game but they changed all the level design , removed some nice features (like another playable character) and generally fucked it up a bit.

I just played this little gem and it's old-school castlevania goodness with some pretty cool features added. There are multiple routes, 2 playable characters, and different endings. If you play it only once you see only half of the game.

Someone compiled a standalone version for windows. You can find it here : http://www.snesorama.us/board/showthread.php?t=20398
(The working links are in the second page)

The game is in Japanese, but the menus are in english and Japanese appear only on the cutscenes. A translation of the cutscenes is included in a txt.

Could you upload this translation.txt separately, ghostdog?
Just yesterday I've decided to give this game a go, but I'm leechnig from UG. :)
And also:
Ogg Vorbis files are now at 128Kbs instead of 64KBs. Note that the CD-DA tracks were ripped
from a perfect copy of the game (As in previous versions...) so sound quality should be very
good.
Audiophileswhores can be dissappoint.

Be warned, though, Chi no Rondo is a classic CV game, NOT a Metroidvania. It's tough as balls.

Also, try to find the full CD image, the soundtrack is amazing.

Yeah, no kidding. Rondo of Blood is tough as hell, in an awesome way.

Also, I'm gay for Richter.

Dammit man, it's a 46 MB direct download which doesn't even need the crappy Magic Engine emulator to play. It's not like you have to download 150 MB for 15 minutes of a wrench-wielding let's play...

oh, ok :

Code:
Demon Castle/Vampire Killer Dracula X : The Rondo of Blood
           ---------------------------------------------------------
                        [Cinemas Translation v 1.0]
                        Game copyright 1994 Konami
                          *FOR PRIVATE USE ONLY*
                         Translation by Yo Kosiman
                           Editing by K. Itazura
Opening
----------------
In the good old days,
people only knew peace and prosperity.
But no one thought that perhaps, the days of unease would not come
Behind prosperity and peace,
There is invariably evil.
Those who would reject the people's prosperity,
and corrupt the peace.
Those who would resurrect the powers of darkness,
and recreate this corrupted world have gathered.
With arbitrary smiles,
they eagerly await the recreation..
One hundred years later,
the evil one is again reborn.
Primarily preferring to act in the night.
He can alter his form into a bat, wolf and turn into fog.
He sucks the blood of young women,
to preserve his eternal life.
Master of Demon Castle,
god of malice,
Count Dracula has returned.
Demon Castle Dracula X
------------
Stage 0:

Death: So this is your power?
Death: Let's give you a test
Death: it will be like this the rest of the way!
-----
Richter and Maria

Maria: Who are you? Are you a good person?
Richter: I'm Richter Belmont, a vampire hunter.
Maria: I'm Maria Larened.
Maria: I've heard about you from Anette before.
Maria: I came to beat the bad man, but I got caught.
Maria: I'm a vampire hunter too!
Maria: So, let's be friends from now on.
Richter: Friends.
Richter: But, you're not ready yet.
Maria: That's not so! I can handle it!
Maria: Leave beating the bad man to me!
(Richter laughing after Maria's comment :))
-------
Richter and Tera

Tera: Who? Oh my!
Richter: Ah, um...
Tera: You must be heaven sent, you're my saviour.
Richter: The path up to here is safe now.
Richter: Hurry back to the village, Okay?
Tera: Ah, who are you?
Richter: Richter Belmont, vampire hunter.
Tera: Richter, may God watch over you.
-------------
Maria and Tera

Tera: Who? Oh my!
Tera: You must be heaven sent, you're an angel.
Maria: Hurry back to the village. Be careful.
Tera: Ah, what's your name?
Maria: Maria Larnedo, vampire hunter!
Tera: Maria, God is watching over you.
----------
Richter and Iris

Iris: What?
Iris: Did you come to save me?
Richter: Yes.
Iris: Oh dear, you're hurt!
Richter: Nah, it's ok. This is only a scratch. I'll be going now.
Iris: Ah, wait! Even like this, I'm a doctor's daughter, you know.
Iris: That should do it.
Richter: Thanks.
Iris: No, I'm the one who should be grateful. Thank you.
Iris: You're going to keep going ahead, right? Be careful.
------------
Maira and Iris

Iris: What is it?
Iris: Could it be you've come to save me?
Maria: Yep!
Iris: Oh dear, you're hurt!
Maria: Yeah, but I'm ok!
Maria: Ah, I have to go already. Bye!
Iris: Ah, wait! Even like this, I'm a doctor's daughter, you know.
Iris: That should do it.
Maria: Wow!, Thanks!
Iris: No, I'm the one who should be grateful. Thank you.
Iris: This place is very dangerous. Be careful.
--------------
Dracula and Annette

Dracula: What a fine girl.
Dracula: How the blood of a beautiful woman will quench my body!
Annette: Stay away!
Dracula: What are you frightened of?
Dracula: I can give you eternal life and beauty.
Dracula: It's a simple matter.
Dracula: So why not rule this world with me.
Annette: If I'm going to fall in such a cheap manner, I'll take my life with my
own hands!
Dracula: Fine.
Dracula: But what is it that you call cheap?
Dracula: If you call my existence cheap,
Dracula: Then wouldn't all this world's, this age's human desire it be
cheep also?
Dracula: I am probably this world's way to its desire.
Dracula: Don't you think so...
Guard: Count!
Dracula: What is it?
Gaurd: There's someone suspicious in the castle.
Dracula: I see. This thing called destiny is such fun.
Dracula: Well, it seems we have an interruption.
Dracula: So then, I'll see you later. Be well.
(Dracula cackles with insane glee)
Annette: Save me Richter...
-----------
Richter and Annette

Richter: Anette!
Annette: Richter!
Richter: Are you hurt?
Annette: No, and you?
Richter: Naw, I'm fine.
Richter: I have vampire hunter's blood coursing through me.
Richter: It's good to bleed a little.
Annette: Oh my!
RIchter: You go on ahead back to the village.
Richter: I'm going on farther.
Richter: It's the hundred year anniversary of our circle of blood
Annette: So then...
Richter: Yes. I going to kill the bastard with my own hands.
Annette: You can't! It's too dangerous.
Richter: Yes, but that is my destiny. Also his blood calls out to me.
Richter: The path up to here is safe. Go quickly!
Annette: Richter! Wait! Richter!
Annette: Come back safely. Please..
------------
Maria and Annet

Maira: Sister!
Annette: Maria!
Annette: Are you okay, Maria?
Maria: Yep, just fine!
Maria: That's because I have the the same vampire hunter's blood flowing
through me just like Richter
Maria: Richter must be fighting somewhere now too!
Annette: Richter's here...
Maria: Uh-oh, it looks like it would've been better if I weren't
the one who came to save you.
Annette: No, that's not so.
Annette: Thank you Maria.
Annette: Come on, let's go home.
Maria: Not yet. There's still something I have to do.
Maria: You go on ahead.
Maria: I'm going to beat the vampire!
Maria: Bye!
Annette: Maria!
Annette: Really, she jumps ahead just like Richter.
-------
Richter and Maria vs Dracula (both endings edited together)

Dracula: Defeated by the blood of Belmont.
Dracula: This could be fate...
Richter: Die! This world is no place for you to live in!
Maria: It's because you were bad and mean to everyone!
Dracula: I am not resurrected through my own power.
Dracula: I am resurrected through human desires.
Dracula: For power, they steal. And power becomes the only justice.
Richter: That's just your wishful thinking!
Richter: People seek, pray, hope at the same church!
Richter: Never must they meet evil!
Maria: I don't know about that. You say some harsh stuff.
Maria: But bad things are bad things!!!
Dracula: That's the reason I am here. Do you not have any desires?
Dracula: You humans develop according to desire, and come to me
after loosing faith.
Dracula: Can you really call me evil?
Richter: But humans can't steal for power.
Richter: If there is something precious, honored or loved they can steal
Richter: Evil will eventually perish!
Dracula: I see. Maybe so.
Dracula: As long as there are greedy humans, I will return.
Dracula: Just remeber that.
Dracula: It was quite enjoyable.
Dracula: Descendant of Belmont, we'll meet again!
[Dracula leaves and cackles with insane glee]
Maria: What's so funny?!
[The castle starts to colapse while Richter and Maria trys to escape]
Maria: Let's get out of here quickly, everyone!!!
[Maria and Richter escapes]

This thread is pure joy. SNES has always been and will always be, hands-down, my favorite console, and not just for nostalgic value. I just recently started playing Super Castlevania IV - admittedly for the first time, after seeing it on an AVGN video no less - and OH GOD ITS HEAVAN.

Speaking of the SNES, I really should revive my Ultima VII LP...

Yep , it was good to play again a tough platformer. But it was easier than Castlevania on the NES and I had finished that game many times back in the day. :smug:

I can make a video LP of Rondo of Blood, if people are interested. I suck really hard at the game, so it should be entertaining to watch.

Well, the game is difficult mostly because of the shitty controls, though, i.e. no air control. The unlockable character, Maria, is much easier to play, since she has air control (and her attack can be easily spammed).

It's been a couple of months since I played it, but I'm p. sure you can control Richter in mid-air. Only NES Castlevania games don't allow you to change direction after jumping, AFAIK.

No, Richter has no air control in Chi no Rondo. You're probably confusing it with SotN, where he does have air control (and many new moves).

It's already been done so unless you're going to be doing a running commentary you won't necessarily be bringing anything new to the table. I'd still watch it though.

Richter basically has that backward jump in mid-air but it works only when he's stationary, so it's pretty difficult to master.

There's one really cruel stage where you must cross a crumbling bridge with fucking huge birds constantly attacking you from the front and the back. That stage made me nerdrage.

Go for the LP καλός και αγαθός.

You're right, I just checked. You can, however, turn around in mid-air, making getting assraped by swarms of bats and medusa heads slightly less of a danger. You can also land on staircases by holding up.

This is the Codex. Everyone knows that we live in the past and hate everything new.

Contra Hard Corps was mega-awesome too. I remember being impressed by hugeass bosses it threw at you.
It was also very hard back then and I've still managed to complete it. I've tried replaying it some time ago with an emulator and got raped hard right away. And the final boss of one of the "plot" lines (alien heart iirc) - I've managed to beat only through save-load feature of Gens :<

And then Contra went for crappy 3D anime shit.
I think these days the closest thing resembling Konami's old arcade shooters is Contra 4 for NDS.

Video Lps need running commentary

This?

if not, try googling "Zsnes netplay".

Yeah Hard Corps is p.cool. I remember playing it with my neighbor in 2 player mode back when I had a Genesis. What's really cool about it is that it has a lot of branching paths, several endings (about 5 I think) and several possible final bosses and secret bosses too. I liked it a lot more than the (S)NES contras I've played.

Genesis wins because it had Mutant League Football.
Love that game. Exploding footballs, wiping out the other team, taking out the referee...good times.

Lots of great suggestions already, so some of what I'll bring up might have already been mentioned, but I liked them:

Genesis
Phantasy Star II - IV (III is alright, I didn't care too much for it, but IV was a great way to end the RPG series for the Genesis)
Streets of Rage series (beat 'em ups)
Castle of Illusion
Arcus Odyssey
Ys III
Gunstar Heroes
MUSHA

SNES
Another vote for Actraiser
FF3/6
Breath of Fire series
Contra III
Earthbound
Cybernator
Super Mario RPG
