How about 'Afterlife', a god game that simulates heaven and hell; at least half of the game could be presumed to take place underground.

SimAnt at least for a part takes place underground.

Alone in the Dark has a long underground section and should help you kick the need to live secluded in a cave. Or enforce it.

Finally I suggest Half Life 1 but I don't really know why.

'Cos it takes place underground, mostly. The opening gives a good feel of going deep into the bowels of the earth, albeit with plenty of other folk and technology around the place.

The Dungeonkeeper games are underground, but since you have God view there isn't really a feeling of oppressiveness or confinement.

It's a shame that Dungeon Hero game was never released. With all the work they seem to have put into it, you'd think somebody would publish it, even one of the smaller distributors. It sounded like it could've been great: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeon_Hero

Well, Icewind Dale has Dorn's Deep complete with glowing mushrooms, underground cities, and spooky crypts.

There's a cave level in Dark Messiah. There's a cool cave in one of the Half Life 2 episodes (2 maybe?)

Of course none of these take place entirely underground, but if it's just the atmosphere, then they certainly bring it.

Half Life 1, as other people said, takes place mostly underground.

There's also Metro 2033. You don't even want to be on the surface in that game. It's severely irradiated and you have to put on a gas mask due to toxic air.

I wouldn't know, I haven't played it myself. But whatever man. He asked for underground games, he got it.
