I'm digging those vibes.
There's no lights on the majority of the buildings' facades. Walls are perfectly flat with no bump or specular maps. No SSAO, no GI, no volumetric fog. There's some bloom on roadside signs much like in VTMB.
Looks better than many modern games.
I guess the VTMB vibe was mostly just being in the 90's at night. And it's still sufficient.
Hopefully King Crispy doesn't mind because despite promoting piracy I try to avoid falling afoul of the DMCA's "making available" clause.
If anyone's interested in walking around the map by yourself but don't have Garry's Mod and don't want to pay for it:
- you can find a 2023 BitTorrent release of Garry's Mod made by somebody named Pioneer.
- download the mod using this recipe, or more easily use somebody's Google Drive link.
- copy the
rp_nycity.bsp
file togarrysmod/maps/
. - the console can be activated using the ~ tilde key to the left of the '1' key once the options dialog is opened.
- type
map rp_nycity
into the console. - gmod doesn't default to max settings, so go to the Video tab in the options screen and set it up including max antialiasing.
+speed
(disable it with -speed
) or use the Shift key to move quickly or use the noclip
command to fly through static geometry.
