We all know the big ones when it comes to storyfaggotry in RPGs - you have your Torments, your Masks of Betrayer, Arcanums, etc. But, outside the rpg bubble, which video game has a good (or at least decent) story?

What is it with just posting screenies without naming the title? Do you think that makes your posts mysterious and interesting or something?

on topic:
-Sanitarium
-Silent Hill 1-3
-If you don't really care about gameplay: The Wolf Among Us

Gemini Rue has a pretty cool atmosphere, but as a friendly word of advice I'd reccomend you to have a little patience with the inventory and interface, because they are rather clunky. The game also has shooting sections, but are very few and you can just try again when you fail (iirc), and I think you can adjust how complicated they are as well.

Other than that it's a very good game, it really relies on calmer passages, most of the times the game doesn't even have backgrund music.

The other two games are pretty good, Blackwell series has 5 games, 4 of them being 2 or 3 hours long and the final one is like 4 or 5 hours long. Primordia is obv. a Codex favorite, very cool game.

I'd go with Blackwell first, then Primordia and then Gemini Rue.

People making a topic like this and not listing a single adventure - except Hobo i guess. The decline is complete.

Strangely, most adventure games are dumb and poorly written, IMO.

In the realm of shootbang, Wolfenstein: The New Order was alarmingly good considering the absurd premise. Spec Ops: The Line is also good, although overrated in some circles and not that much fun to play.

Shadow of the Colossus probably has my favorite game "story", although it's very minimalist and is front and back loaded.

Mafia is right there with it, though. That game might as well be a legit Hollywood film, plus the action is great so that's cool too.

Splinter Cell: Double Agent easily has the best like thriller/psy-ops type story, IMO. Chaos Theory was pretty good, too, but there's some really good stuff in Double Agent. A shame the gameplay was so shoddy, though.

Ico (Sony 2001) and Shadow of the Colossus (Sony 2005) would be considered classics of the symbolist movement if only they had somehow been created a century earlier. The storytelling is minimalist yet oddly compelling, enhanced in both cases by the atmosphere generated by sound & graphics.

Another World (Eric Chahi 1991) managed to tell an absorbing story through its graphics, without any use of language.

Alpha Protocol (Obsidian 2010) is almost worth playing for its nonlinear plot and development of character relationships, though the actual gameplay is dreadful (and despite claiming to be an "espionage RPG" it isn't close to being an RPG and has little espionage).

Thief: The Dark Project (LGS 1998), Thief II: The Metal Age (LGS 2000), and Deus Ex (Ion Storm 2000) are perhaps too well known on the Codex to be worth mentioning, but they belong here for having good stories told in appropriate ways.

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers (Sierra 1993), Grim Fandango (LucasArts 1998), and The Longest Journey (Funcom 2000) are perhaps the best story-driven adventure games, each with entertaining characters and plot (and even with good voice-acting).

if we listed adventure games it would be too easy since that genre is focused on narrative.
