I didn't play it until way the fuck later than release, but it's another one of those squad based tactics games where the hardest fight in the game is over within the first few maps. The character stats are much more important than any strategy IIRC so it's just "get best gun, use best mercs (mainly the Russian guy), mow down dudes, repair your shit and do it again." Whereas in your JA2 you will have to use some AI exploits or you get overwhelmed. Very little gunporn in JA1 also, if you go straight from JA2 1.13 to JA1 you may get the bends.
