It served to break the long series of updates with few or no deaths, and it was dramatic enough to warrant a little slip in the timeline. I also wanted to carry on with the game and needed new recruits to replace the dead/bugged soldiers.

UPDATE 31 - Revenge of the Gillmen
When we left off, Pacific team had just managed to recover a dreadnought.
BayBee and lightbane arrive to reinforce Atlantic team, despite some officers' protests.
Garfunkel III is sent to Pacific Team, filling a vacancy.
No rest for X-Com, as a medium sub is found touched down near Northern Europe.
We have no means to intercept it yet.
An hour later, Triton-1 is refueled and goes for it.
The aliens take their time, allowing our slow transport to arrive before their mission is finished.
Gillmen once again. This is getting repetitive.
This one is shot by Banelion.
Sergiu finds another one.
Which is shot by Oscar.
Sergiu also finds a shadow to the west.
A pulser deals with the unseen threat.
The explosion blows up a pipeline of some sort, which propagates and kills a hidden unit.
A gillman is seen fleeing the area.
Hot on its trail, Sergiu finds two aliens waiting for him.
The first one receives a Thermal Shok, but remains standing.
eklektyk has to step up and shoot it down.
The other soldiers threw pulsers, one particularly badly thrown.
And another right on target.
The next turn, Sergiu comes across a very dangerous assault party. One sonic cannon and two DPL users.
One of them is a technician, so eklektyk uses a Thermal Shok to stun the lot.
A gillman is left standing, but Oscar shoots it down.
There's yet another one in the same area!
Not for long, as Banelion shoots the alien and scores another kill.
One more alien, fleeing the site.
Although it changed its mind halfway through and came back.
eklektyk doesn't like cowards, so he shoots the green monster down with haste.
The sub is discovered to the south. It's not particularly big, a smaller version of a Battle Ship.
An alien storms out and throws a pulser at KickAss Jr. Without armor, the aquanaut doesn't survive the blast.

, kicking ass is fine but you couldn't kick the grenade back to its thrower.
ironyuri finds the grenadier as he reaches the end of his turn.
Zdzisiu kills it with a well aimed sonic blast.
ironyuri continues to scout the area around the sub entrance.
Zdzisiu's sniper support helps him out rather well.
Sergiu went around and somehow manages to see a gillman through a crack.
Proximity mines were laid out near the entrance, but no more alien dared to venture out.
Joka bravely stepped up, trusting in his sturdy armor, and took the blast.
The explosion punched through the protection but Joka is still alive. He spots an alien inside the sub.
eklektyk shoots it down from outside.
The following turn, Joka finds another alien standing at the exact same spot.
eklektyk is already in position, and kills the alien.

The next turn, Joka goes further and takes on step inside the ship. What he sees isn't reassuring.

No more playing around, Shepard takes out a DPL and plots a course.
The end is poorly planned, as the alien moved around. The torpedo continues after the last way point and explodes at the back of the ship, damaging equipment but without killing anything.
Sergiu throws a grenade in the crack, but it doesn't kill anything either.
Second chance for Shepard, this time with a higher chance to kill the snipers up top.
Aliens die, success!
An alien throws a pulser rather poorly, or maybe drops it in panic. It blows the gillman up.
Sergiu charges the sub and finds an alien still standing. Unarmed, probably panicked.
Or not, Sergiu is shot down in the following turn.

, you shouldn't make assumptions about unarmed aliens.
Hellraiser tries to shoot a Thermal Shok in the little room containing the alien, but only manages to stun himself.
Shepard plots yet another torpedo course.
It blows up, but doesn't kill.
Yeesh and Banelion storm the sub and begin looking for an alien. Banelion is shot in the back, but isn't wounded.
The alien went off the ship through a crack in the hull made by our last torpedo, but eklektyk was waiting nearby, and nails it. Finally, this mission ends.
Twenty aliens, that's one more than the dreadnought contained. Most crammed inside a rather small ship and armed with sonic cannons and pulsers. Gillmen can still be a threat.
The recent officer deaths allow some soldiers to advance and receive armor.
