Any tips for the crypt?

Is dispel undead worth getting before I go in?

Also, I went into my first wizlab today. Those things are cool. I got the cloud one. I love monsters that can't sInv :)

I'd grab dispel undead on anyone that can reliably cast it. There's such a huge variety of undead you're bound to encounter something immune to all the other stuff you got sooner or later. Not to mention player ghosts.

Only wizlab I've seen is the garden. Thought everything was going to be an easy stroll until the stone golems showed up. Also, not the best place to use fire magic in. Although, fire doesn't seem to torch loot in crawl, that I've noticed.

your future if you're not careful...
Once apon a time, I was down in the Vaults with shit equipment, I mean really just shit. I found a scroll of Acquirement, and I was very excited. I noticed that I'm not wearing ANY randart armor, and in addition my boots and cloak are +0 non-magical. The closest thing to a piece I like is my +1 gloves of dexterity, and they ain't so great. Nothing I could get could fail to be an upgrade. So poof, what appears at my feet? A pair of gloves. Here's my message history for trying them on:

Code:
You continue taking off your +1 pair of gloves of dexterity.
You finish taking off your +1 pair of gloves of dexterity.
You feel clumsy.
You start putting on your armour.
You continue putting on your pair of glowing gloves.
You finish putting on your +1 pair of gloves of dexterity.
You feel agile.

Awesome.

Now just imagine worshiping Xom and having that type of luck happen constantly. Nothing like using a teleport scroll to get away from an ogre around level five or so only to have Xom port you right back only a couple turns later.

This is pretty well the luckiest game I've ever had.

I'm due to dying soon.

Just ran my ass away from Mara on DL:18 or so. Last thing I want it a copy of myself with a crazy katana and resistances to just about everything.

I'm being pretty careful though. My closest run in with death was in Shoals earlier against norris when i just kept spamming ozo's refrigeration and didn't notice he was also smiting me. Went down to 11 HP in like 4 moves of not paying attention. Oops.

I just don't pay enough attention. I didn't realize orc sorcerers summoned demons. Is this the end for Crunchy?

Didn't you read Mr. Hawking's story? That's how he died. :)

You're not screwed... You have scrolls of blinking and of teleport. I'd probably use teleport in this case. In the position you're in you only have to worry about the warg (unless the sorceror summons a hellion, then blink the fuck out of there asap because they do smite targeted fire damage). I'd probably drink a healing potion as well while youre waiting for the teleport, just in case it goes badly (if it goes badly, blink - with a scroll - to safety).

Most likely *NOT* the best thing to do, but I'm curious as to what some others would expect to happen if you did the following:

Blink next to the summoner, rage, and take him down before any more summons come out.

Could also try the wand of draining, but I'm guessing that that wouldn't take him down as quickly as the blink + rage combo, although on the up side you'd still be able to port.

Hell, you could get the port setup and spam the wand while waiting.

So the teleport dropped me down here, which could have been worse but could have been better. Luckily I don't have any fire resistance. Charge the dragon? Try to run up through the blackness to the stairs? Blink and just let the RNG decide?

I think its too early to run, just spam draining until orc dies and then go up and wait for summons to expire.

At this point? I'd probably just run. Blink if necessary.

How are you at vaults with no rF?

I'm curious as to what some others would expect to happen if you did the following:

Blink next to the summoner, rage, and take him down before any more summons come out.

Odds are that he'd take the summoner down, but it's also possible that the summoner would summon something nasty and strong enough to kill him, and while he's zerking he can't read his escape scrolls.

Nothing wrong with a bit of caution in this case.

Just remember you have scrolls of blinking too, those are damn near the best escape tool in the game. Normally I only see shadow and ice dragons in the vaults, and you have a lot of negative resist. Kinda shitty you found the one dragon type that can fuck you up. At least you got a wand of cold and a frost branded axe to take him down after your hp are back up to full.

and take out the stuff that doesn't matter

Have you turned off your short blade and unarmed skills?

Turn off enchantments as well. It's high enough for now - you need to gain spellcasting so you can reduce your spell hunger + increase your success rate.

...

My SpEn just cleared Vaults and the dungeon is clear. I've left the Crypt alone for now because of Khufu standing on the entrance (for the last 20k turns....).

I'm pretty confidant he could stand a trip to the abyss (have haste at no-hunger excellent, even though its nerfed in trunk), so I'm thinking the final vault in Elf, then maybe dip into slime - all my stuff is pretty much randarts, and then open up zot?

As much as I may want to experience the endgame content, I just want to get a win.

your future if you're not careful...
I ran to the stairs, meeting nothing along the way but a single butterfly that of course managed to get in my way and delay me for a turn, but I made it without seeing the dragon's breath. Once up there, I rested up, dropped my scrolls, and returned down the stairs in a berserker rage. The dragon lasted two hits and wasn't even enough of a gentleman to leave a corpse. Fucker. I really could have used fire resistance.

I am at a loss as to where to go now. Of course I didn't get the Snake PIts, so I'm left with the choice of:

Icy Swamp 5 (and I don't have a fire brand axe, plus they don't recommend meleeing ice hydras anyway)
Shoals (never been, sounds like death to slow melee characters)
Slime Pits (never been, doesn't sound pleasant. Did I mention I don't use randart armor? But I do have exactly one piece of randart platemail I could put on.)
Elf Halls (I don't think it would be too bad with clarity and see inv, but THAT's the place I've been avoiding because I don't have fire resistance. They'll burn my pretty scrolls)
Dungeon 19+
Keep on Vaults truckin' (maybe find the Hall of Blades and get me a firebrand axe!)

Thanks for all the help. I'm really learning the fine art of knowing when to hold em, and when to fold em.

EDIT: Speaking of the Vaults, is it worth trying to dig into all those empty squares that look like rooms without doors? I tried one and it was just solid rock. But if some weren't...

EDIT EDIT:
Code:
You are wielding the -5,+6 executioner's axe of Hacking and Slashing {god gift, freeze, +Blink +Lev rElec}.
Fuck you, Trog. Fuck you.

@ Dexter:

You should wear your jewelry to try an ID some of it, you got 4 remove curse scrolls, so there's no danger. I'd avoid the orc mines for now, priests and wizards can do a hefty number on a vampire. Go check out the lair. Most stuff in there can be put to sleep or confused easily enough, and there isn't much in the way of ranged attacks, which is your biggest weakness right now.

Anyone wondering about slime pits: STAY THE FUCK AWAY. Even the first level can be extremely deadly, with very fast enchantment/poison immune bastards that hit multiple times for heavy acid/cold damage. Slime pits is for summoners and casters that can murder shit from afar completely reliably, or warriors with over 150 hp and full randart gear with tons of resists.

@ Yeesh, I suggest swamp 5, your ice axe at least grants more cold resist so any ice damage in there will be neglible for you. Also, don't forget you can use Trog's spellbook burning for fire attacks. Just don't go trying to melee hydras and you should be ok. Hall of Blades might be worth checking out too, since a fire brand will be nice for hydras in the long run, simulacrums or not. But you might run into hydras on your way there anyways. I've only done Shoals with a perma flying missile immune stabber spamming intoxication, so I'm not sure how dangerous stuff like mermaids and sirens will be for a melee character. I can tell you this much: the tides cut off land routes a LOT. The bottom does have a ton of nice loot though, multiple easily raided mini vaults with a few guards in each. Much nicer than the end of the Elf branch, which had like 20 high level elves, 18 of them casters and about half of those summoners. And it had less loot after all that work too. Though I think I ran into Aizul in shoals, so, blarg.

I got cocky on elf after having an extremely easy time with the first part of the vault.

I over extended and tried to stab a blademaster. And there's no tcontrol for your blink scrolls so I had no escape once I started getting blasted from one side and hit from the other.

Fuck. He was definitely good enough to win too. Was good enough to murder all the bastards in elf too, if I had just gone a bit slower.

Poison arrow is a hell of a spell.

No kidding.

I ended up making a mini stash at the entrance where I stashed every scroll (Ring of tele and Chei's third ability for escape if needed) and extra potions upon clearing each level.

Getting really fucking tired of the constant drain attacks around midway down the halls, even with 2/3 life prot and an amulet of warding.

On a more positive note, to counterbalance 7hm's death, I found my first rune at the end of the snake pit. Was surprisingly easy thanks to the layout (many single tile halls) that allowed my Chei worshiping fighter to slowly hack his way through the guardians. Much unlike the previous level where half the map is off limits (Disconnected level, fortunately) due to that Boris fucker.

Congrats!

I didn't have an issue with draining until vault:8 when I encountered a bunch of shadow dragons.

To die with a guy who was two shotting stone giants and dragons. Bah.

RIP. :salute:

Crunchy's time will come soon. This game really rewards you for playing like a wuss and not taking chances. If I were Trog, I wouldn't even be part of it.

Can anyone tell me exactly what to do to make auto-explore stop when my spells are about to expire? It gives me the -more- prompt when something was about to run out, but then continue exploring when I hit a button, letting the spell drop anyways. :x

All I want is to be able to loot these shitty levels without starving to death recasting deflect missiles or running out of mana recasting flight and tele control and extension.
