It's a matter of control, what we call "own". Give away control and it's gone. I don't mind others freely giving away theirs. I will not give up mine (freely). *shrug*

Unless you live in a bubble and are independently wealthy I guarantee you that you give up 'control' in some form or another in a variety of ways in all aspects of life outside of the computer game market. Economically, politically, socially, life is a series of compromises. We all make them and 'sell out' on some level or another.
Needless loss of control and freedom is needless.
You're dependant on stuff anyway. Why not become my slave. We all have to make compromises :M

It scares me that there are people so willing to get deprived of their rights.

Seriously? People worship religions that dictate every aspect of their lives. I would be MORE shocked if people were highly unwilling to be deprived of their rights. That feeling of belonging, security, and being important in a society is clearly more important to most when you think about it. If that wasn't the case, the impact of religion would be less widespread world-wide. A false sense of security is more important than having the freedom to do as they please it seems.

Edit: The only reason such people would lash out is when their rights are deprived to the point that things they value are taken away. Not before.

And so a discussion on Steam has turned into a discussion on religion. At least it didn't turn into comparisons with Nazis... yet.

Nazis were better than Steam.

They would eventually put you out of your misery in a shorter amount of time (though painfully). Steam is a unholy abomination that will suck the life out of you to sustain itself while also giving you ever so little life back to ensure you do not die. Then, when you have become a complacent thrall, it'll kick you out onto the streets, letting you rot in your own feces until you succumb to the depressing thoughts of how worthless a person you truly are for supporting such an demonic being. Then you will die and forever you will be forgotten as if you were just another piece of trash being thrown out into the dumpster.

Well Steamworks integration is good news but I still have my doubts about the quality of the game. Multiplatform development is rarely a good sign.

The best thing about Steam is that the two games I bought via are so terrible that they were uninstalled startlingly quickly. Steam is an automatic point against a game and, quite frankly, there aren't any games good enough to overcome that lately.

Curious fact: STEAM is (almost) an anagram for SATAN. Coincidence? I think not.

Is not being able to resell games really that much of a turn off? I live in third world and I never missed the three bucks I'd get from my used pc games. I didn't even care about selling my old console games, and those actually sell for a decent value.

More like, there are people that don't really care about giving up some rights they consider meaningless, like that of being sure they'll be able to install some game via CD twenty years later.

Mostly because in 20 years games will be downloaded directly into our brains anyway, so the CD will be useless because there will be no CD drives. The butthurt will be interesting to see.

But Valve controls your mind

Good point , who would care about installing game from CD after 20 years ? CD/DVD-rom's won't be in use after 7 years or so.Same as installing something from floppy now-days.
A real collector keeps his games in mint condition anyways.+ you can download everything.
There is no point in buying game if it doesn't have multilayer and steam is great platform for multiplayer especially if they will further improve their voice chat. But if you want to support dev's , in that case buy it and keep it in your collection unpacked.

Yeah well I can also make an iso or just keep the game installed on my HDD for 20 years and it will always be usable. When steam goes down, you won't even be able to play a game you have installed on your HDD.

Well, it's far more likely they'll be bought by Warner-Disney or something and allow you access for the low, low price of 250$ per month (post-inflationary collapse) + a few unobtrusive advertisements overlayed over your menus.

Wow. Seeing the dickhead responses to the OP is rage inducing.

Oh yes, i remember how i once asked for advice on their forum. It went something like this:

Me: Hi guys, i am having a problem, i alredy tried the solution from FAQ but it didn't work. I also tried some additional solutions found by google but they didn't help too. Can you look into this?

Dickheads: OMG u r retarded, read the FAQ!!!11

Me: Ehh, i already did. It's not helping.

Dickheads: stop trolling stupid whiner, go read FAQ!11!

Official response: Steam is not responsible for problems with games not developed by Valve.

Of course developer's tech support told me that they are not responsible for problems with Steam. I solved the problem by using cracked exe.

 :salute:

Honestly, the last place I think to look for a fix is at official websites. Seems like some other poor soul has already figured out that they're useless and posted their own fix somewhere online.
